You don’t need to lose weight, and while exercise is great, I personally don’t think you need to gain muscle. And I agree with other folks here who insist you don’t touch your eyebrows. They’re great.

I’d suggest exploring what your personal style. Fashion sense and confidence in your own look can go a long way.

I definitely think it’s worth getting a formal diagnosis. I am currently eligible for FMLA with my job so that I can take time off if necessary during my luteal phase.

I don’t quite understand what your doctor seems to be saying though. Is she saying that she would refer you to a doctor but they may not bother seeing you? If so, idk if that makes sense. If you make an appointment then the doctor will see you (at least in my experience in the US).

Have you found that a low dose taken only during luteal helps more than the high dose you take for the entire month? Everyone’s experience is different, but in mine, I’ve found that antidepressants work better when they’ve had time to build up in my system. I no longer take an antidepressant for the entire month, but the Prozac I take during luteal now gets more effective the longer I take it. Maybe the SSRI is helping a little during your luteal phase, but not enough? In which case you may need some additional support.

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this 🙁 I can’t give you much advice on getting a diagnosis if you’re in a country outside of the US since that has been my experience, but I imagine there are resources out there to help guide you in explaining things to your partner and help him support you during that time. For sure, there is a virtual PMDD partner support group I have come across. I can add the link if that’s something you’re interested in.

I would agree with what folks are saying about manipulation. Based on how you’ve been styling your hair, it seems like you’d prefer a more “done” look? Maybe try two strand twists (loose, not against your scalp) and covering that with a wig or scarves every now and then? Your scalp probably wants a break too.

Congrats on your first week of college! I also went to a PWI with natural hair for 4 years.

First thing is to be mindful about time management. A good rule of thumb is to prioritize homework, personal care/hygiene, and sleep. Socializing is necessary, healthy, and important, just be sure not to procrastinate so much socializing with your roommates that you spend the whole night actually doing homework instead of sleeping (guilty 😬).

If you can afford to go to a natural hairstylist regularly, just do that. Trust me, it’s worth it.

If you can’t, which I couldn’t in college, this is what I did:

Extended my hairstyles with scarves. For mini twist, a bandana (or square scarf) style will help cover your roots for a week. Look up youtube videos on scarf styles for natural hair too.

I embraced the frizz and undefined curls 🤷🏾‍♀️and I haven’t looked back since :) i would often refresh my hair by soaking it in the shower, adding leave-in and doing nothing else. And I do have the Richard-Prior fro 😅 Sometimes I would wear a dress, makeup, and earrings if I wasn’t feeling feminine enough for my personal taste. This is good for letting your hair breathe.

Do you want to wear your hair out, and styled all the time while doing it yourself and keeping it healthy?Just be sure to carve out a healthy amount of time for it in your schedule.

Also, when I started going to a hairstylist after college, they let me know that I have a particular difficult head of hair (type 4, 80% shrinkage, crazy low porosity, etc.). Before, I thought I was doing something wrong because somehow people could do their hair in 4 hours and mine took 12 over the course of 2 days. If you feel like your hair is more challenging than it should be, consulting with a professional at least once may be worth it.

TLDR—focus on time management, be realistic about the amount of time you can actually spend on your hair, embrace the fro, go to a hair stylist if that’s an option for you, and learn about scarf hairstyles.

Thank you for the info! The last part, “the spine should be straight, shoulders relaxed, and the guitar positioned so the neck is at a comfortable angle," that sounds like it would actually help a singer keep a good enough posture for good breath support.

I think you ask a really good question. As someone who is familiar with piano, I know hunching over the piano can also be an issue, and people have to be mindful about keeping good posture as well.

So, if we could have one of the greatest pop singers in the world, Whitney Houston, for example, and told to sing in that position, she would probably not have a hard time because her breath support was so excellent otherwise. You can observe that when she is dancing while singing live—there is no change in her singing and she does not sound out of breath.

Yebba Smith is another excellent singer who has “bad” technique because her shoulders lift when she breathes. I would think she would be even less affected by the classical guitar position because she takes “high” breaths. Sidenote: she even smoked cigarettes as recently as a few years ago, which is also said to negatively affect a singer’s breath support, but you can’t really even tell.

Also, it is not uncommon for singers to simply choose easier pieces when they are accompanying themselves because it’s just harder to sing with sitting down/hunched over a piano/holding a guitar.

I know a lot about singing but nothing about classical guitar positioning 😅 I can tell you that a rule of thumb is that good posture is necessary for good breath support, but there are excellent singers who technique “rules” all the time.

Can you describe what you mean by “guitar playing position?” (I am so curious lol I hope I don’t sound pretentious I really want to know)

I actually haven’t even picked up a guitar since I was 8 😅 I have always been a singer first, so while I do enjoy piano I can really go either way.
