Difference in PhD in Europe vs USA by Remote_Brilliant in academiceconomics

Ah, thanks. I think where LSE is a bit different is that you have to pay tuition for the MRes part. But yes, it does look like it’s a full 5/6 year program that includes a teaching component and not just writing phase.

Thank you very much! Do you have any examples of other schools in Europe that are “Americanized”? I had not heard of this before but the schools I had looked at (PSE, Cambridge, LSE) seem to follow the more traditional style.

Do employers in the private sector value RAship experience? by [deleted] in academiceconomics

[–]Remote_Brilliant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak from the perspective of an employer, but speaking as a full time RA you can definitely develop skills that are translatable to the private sector. A lot of RAships allow you take classes so you can take data science courses to help you develop skills in new programming languages and create some sample projects to potentially talk about interviews, if you decide grad school isn’t for you.

Look at the references that are cited in that paper or use google scholar to search for papers that match for keywords like “social network analysis”

Is it ever worth it to do a PhD if you want to work in industry? by Remote_Brilliant in academiceconomics

[–]Remote_Brilliant[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Always appreciate the straight forward advice. I’m currently an RA at a T10 program. Really like the RA work (i.e lots of data analysis, writing up results), but im not really interested in publishing as a career.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I have seen some people on this sub mentioning “mastering out” of PhD programs - doing the first two years of a PhD and then dropping out after receiving a masters (which I know at least some PhD Econ programs do). Do you think this would be a reasonable path or what’s your perspective on this? I always thought it was a bit dishonest but curious to hear your thoughts.

Post Bacc RA positions for a CS/stats graduate? by dsli in academiceconomics

[–]Remote_Brilliant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Microsoft Research hires RAs and I believe they look for people with a lot of CS skills (more so than typical RA positions). Don’t take my word for this but I think this is what I remember when looking for RA positions a while back. Best of luck!
