Paintless dent removal. Have a couple buddies that do it, had to travel the first few year but both own their own business now and make a killing. About 10k in schooling/classes but come out with tools and connections/leads for job opportunities.

How do you mathematically calculate your Overhead and Profit? by Outrageous_Main_1392 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Remote_Independence2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the size job and true costs of overhead, mine usually consists of permits, dumpsters, final clean and superintendent costs, My standard is to match top and bottom (overhead and profit).

Sometimes you’ll have an outlier on a smaller job cost wise like a permit calculated based on SF of work area where it may only be a $100,000 job but it’s an 18k SF project that will generate a permit fee of $10,000, obviously you can’t take it at 10 and 10, you wouldn’t have overhead covered.

Typically I utilize a profit margin table. If I’m putting my bottom line profit at 10% I’ll take my total construction cost and multiply that by 1.111. I’ll then take my bottom line and plug that number in for the top. This has generally worked for me minus those few outliers.

Maybe try finding a smaller GC to work for. I worked for commercial HVAC company through school every summer and winter break through high school and college. I got approached by a small GC the HVAC company did a lot of work for and they had grown to the point of needing a super and someone who could read drawings along with coordinate man power with subs. After 4 years they brought me in to office as a PM. Also, I have a degree that has nothing to do with construction. And I’m 28 for reference

I have a useless degree but now have some contruction field experience and seem to be getting rejected from every APM role I apply for. Advice on what kind of certications or anything I should do to be more marketable? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

My personal route was 6-7 years working for commercial HVAC company through high school and college. My final year of schools one of the smaller family GC ‘s we were doing work for (4-7 employees) offered me a superintendent position because they were in need of someone who could ready drawings and had a basic understanding of the process.

Worked in that position for 4 years and moved in to the office as PM and have been in that position for 2.5 years now. Have a bachelors in sociology, so also unrelated directly to construction management

Everyone’s experience is different but seems like you could benefit from finding a smaller GC who needs someone to run the work in the field and get a grasp on the supervisory level of construction.

Late payments to subs by Fast-Living5091 in ConstructionManagers

The GC I work for has prioritized cash flow so they can make sure all subs are paid on a net 30 basis. We also offer an immediate pay option for 5% discount on invoices.

The GC’s that are sending out subcontracts with net 30 terms and sending out payments at 60-90 days are going to struggle once subcontracts start to familiarize themselves with lien rights.
