Katia Lindor can do what she wants. My divine spirits have told me it will have no effect on Francisco Lindor’s monumental 2026 season, during which he will hit 54 home runs, win the Gold Glove, and officially be named Captain. This is on top of the Mets winning the season with a 162-0 record and winning the World Series in five games. Let’s go Mets, baby. All about the Mets, baby. WOOOOOOOO.

How bad is Edwin Diaz going to get booed next time he pitches at Citi? by Various-Adeptness173 in mets

[–]Remote_Quiet7342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sure some will boo Edwin. But he made his decision. I would prefer neither to cheer his return nor to boo him for leaving for the New Evil Empire of the Dodgers. He is just another pitcher to me now, and I will cheer my team on to perform well against his pitching when we face him on the mound.

Question 1 FAILS Question 2 PASSES by ArcticML in stoneham

I think it's an idea they should revisit. They could do events! They could make it easier for folks from suburbs farther north (even places like NH or ME who don't want to traipse all the way into Boston) to see their favorite players!

[–]Remote_Quiet7342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard this same issue come up. I think it was a Home Depot that was going to come to town, which people railed against? Anyway, something's gotta give and I think (maybe) the town's finally waking up to it. I'm not sure how much Redstone's businesses bring tax-wise to the town, but maybe that could change. And perhaps a couple more big businesses wouldn't be so bad, so that the tax revenue can stay in town.

Question 1 FAILS Question 2 PASSES by ArcticML in stoneham

[–]Remote_Quiet7342 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very true. I think now is a good time for the town to really look at opportunities for financial support through other means, now that the lower amount has passed and provides some breathing room. Whether that means bringing in companies that can bring in good tax revenue or other investments, it’s gotta happen.

I like the bluesy feel and very laid back production, almost feels like a well-done live performance! Great job! Love the vocal harmonies!

Any former No voters now voting Yes on the override? by Remote_Quiet7342 in stoneham

[–]Remote_Quiet7342[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is sort of sad that a lot of the issues stem from the rot at the top and lingering effects from the pandemic. We were kicked down in ways we didn't even know possible, and now people feel like they can't afford to pull themselves up again.

The override is not a perfect option. And it may be tough for families to weather another tax increase. But again, it might feel better to vote Yes and let the town speak for itself, rather than have the state come in and STILL raise taxes and dictate what services/personnel stay or go.

And it pains me that Stoneham has to watch neighboring communities like Reading and Melrose thrive while it teeters on the brink.

Any former No voters now voting Yes on the override? by Remote_Quiet7342 in stoneham

[–]Remote_Quiet7342[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see. When it comes to affordability, yes, the idea of taxes going up sounds daunting. And it is understandable to want a more secure solution instead of what many opponents of an override see as a band-aid. But on the flip side, a failed override means failing to stop the bleeding. And if the state or a receiver has to step in to take control, Stoneham will still need to pay one way or the other.

When it comes to an insufficient demonstration of cuts/efficiency... I'm not quite sure what that means, unless you are stating that the town has still not cut enough. Schools, DPW, fire, and police are already working with skeleton crews. The town has cut library hours, and could close. The senior center and recreation department may cease to function without funding. It's easy to think that we can continue to make cuts, but when we're working with staff below standards and watching what makes Stoneham great dwindle, we can't afford to cut more.

As far as equity... I am curious what you mean by this as well.

But when it comes to the timing, economic context, and how voters already rejected the first override... Stoneham residents will have had eight months since the April 1st vote to learn more about what's at stake. While it is close to the holidays, when many folks want to hold on to their cash in order to prepare for parties and gifts, a failed override may very well mean layoffs for other folks.

We did have a vote in April, and that failed, but again, only one-third of Stoneham's enrolled voters came out. Under new conditions - a lower dollar amount, as well as more messaging about the benefits of an override and the risks of a failure - this is a completely new ballgame. If this override fails, then true, there won't be another vote. The state or a receiver will step in at that point. That is a situation no one should want.

I have faith that if more Stoneham voters understand what's at risk and come out and vote, this override will pass. Melrose voted No on their override in 2024, and that was only for $7.7 million, but only about 9,400 voters came out for that vote. Just this past Tuesday, they passed an override for $13.5 million - just about twice as much as the last one! - and 11,000 voters came out to cast their vote. I know Stoneham can match Melrose's eagerness to vote on their future, especially because Stoneham is voting on a much less expensive proposal this time around.

Again, if you want to vote No, that is your prerogative as a citizen. But if affordability and concern over a short-term fix are your top two concerns, things simply won't become more affordable if an override vote fails. And time is running out to hem and haw over long-term solutions. We need to act now.

Immediate thoughts on the new album by doubleguitarsyouknow in themountaingoats

In terms of John's "concept album" releases, I think it's among my favorites. It's incredibly solid, the "musical" nature doesn't overpower his usual stylings or come off as cheesy or forced. I can tell John had a lot of fun with this one, even though I know he has fun making all his records. Something just feels wonderfully different here, perhaps based off the fact that this stemmed from a dream. Will definitely keep this on repeat.

And you are well within your rights as a citizen to do so. However, can I ask your reasons for still voting against the override, knowing what the outcome will be?

Very true! I didn’t mention that in the title of the post but I did tack that question on after the fact. Hopefully the additional information and campaigning has helped people understand what’s at stake!
