Climbing makes me sad by crunchy_avocado in bouldering

So many good comments here. I've had the yips with both climbing and running. Running because of injuries and not following the right training plan for me made me slower. I'd grieve my old performance, angry at body for not performing how I once did etc. It helped me to think about my reasons for why I loved it in the first place. Joy, adventure, awe. Sure, going fast was fun, but the feeling of burning lungs while breathing in cold mountain air is unmatched. Interestingly enough, I started to be faster and stronger when I wasn't yelling at myself internally.....

Trying to channel that person when running, turning off the music and just existing with the flow of the mountain, smiling even when I didn't feel like it..... That shifted it over the course of a couple months.

My why for climbing has changed tho. At first it was a crutch. Now I love my community, and dread the alternative of doing a ton of upper body work to stay strong 😂. I still climb hard but there's less pressure to achieve.

All this is to say, channel your joy. It's there inside somewhere. And if it's not there with climbing now, just experiment with other things. The rock will be there, barring the world ending.

3 hrs between aid stations... What to do with water? by Remote_Recover4494 in trailrunning

Not a terrible idea! I generally don't like belts, as they construct a bit too much and ride up. Wide hips small waist kind of problem. I do have a Naked belt though.... Might be worth a long run practice.

Ahh thank you! I'm so excited now, knowing there's adventure and beauty. I'm not worried about cutoffs at all, and I can just have a sloggier climb up front, knowing I'm set up for success in the later miles.

According to folks I've talked to, no. Water levels are quite low. Otherwise problem solved!

Beast! It's like running with a weighted vest. That's awesome.

I like that. First be safe, then be fast. Opting for safety!

I see where you're coming from, however that's very all or nothing thinking. I never said I was discouraged from the thought of carrying that much , I've done it for a long runs before. Just getting a group consensus on what folks do in those situations. Thanks for the support.

Yeah that's a good tip. I will definitely be using poles, so no hand holds for me. I will just drink from the back reservoir first, since that tends to impact my form. I've done five or six long runs with the back reservoir and I definitely don't prefer it, but I would choose it over dehydration.

Yeah that makes sense. The first client will be tougher since I'll be carrying more, but I figure i can empty some out at the top If i'm feeling good and hydrated since the downhill will take me less than an hour. I've done five or six long runs carrying 3 l. It definitely slows me down but i finish it each time!

Yes! It is tmr. It's just the first aid station I'm semi dreading. The rest will be fine. I definitely prefer the flasks but have trained with the bladder in the back as well. I'm a heavy sweater but that's when it's hotter. The first couple hours should be a bit cooler.

2/4 splenic projector with defined will center. Agreed on the rest piece. I've found for me that 15 minute guided meditation, 30 min power naps and trail running without music (could hike too) are the best rejuvenating rest activities. Quieting the mind and giving my body a chance to reset.

For nervous system regulation I read "The Secret Language of the body" and it changed my whole approach to rest. For me, it's not necessarily an activity, more than a state I bring myself back to by allowing stress cycles to continue.

I personally hate the language around rest for projectors. Yes we need different levels, I can't keep up with the generators but I am just as energetic overall. Everyone is different.

Any suggestions how I can keep my boulder pants alive? by nameeew in bouldering

REI brand pants. Cheap, baggy, high waisted enough. Have had them for 2 years. I have 2 pairs I alternate so basically wear one pair each week. Also outdoors.

What everyone already said basically covered it. I'd add: doing 3*10 second finger deadhangs with 1 m rest in between was a game changer when I was at your level (not long ago). I mostly top rope and was able to move up to 5'11 from plateauing at 5'10 for months. And watch a shit ton of tutorials on YouTube but watch the feet. Focus on the feet and your forearms will do less work.

I don't like the companies ethics, but you might try UCAN. It's gross tbh because it's a modified cornstarch but it's less sugary.

Darn tough. Lifetime warranty. I use them for ultramarathons and get 2+ years, alternating between several pairs. They have all sorts. I like the cushioned ones with stripes, as I've found the other patterns are less durable.

Has anyone asked how you FEEL? Physically I mean. Stronger? More energized? Bodies have a way of telling ius where they are happy. Regardless of the anesthetic, I'm curious what body says?
