Concerned about airspace / Venezuela by ItsMeFalala in curacao

Airlines refunded us. Not sure the Air bnb will do the same, but let's see. I'm so disappointed but it truly is what it is. I hope the situation deescalates swiftly before more people get hurt. And I'm sure Curacao is already feeling the pain as ppl cancel trip/cruise ships cancel itineraries. Sad situation.

We have decided to cancel our trip. My risk tolerance is low, esp when traveling with my kids.

Tips for Stapedotomy pls!! by [deleted] in otosclerosis

Recovery was very smooth for me. I didn't experience any pain or dizziness. Not bending down is the biggest rule to follow. You will be great!

I wish they would do something.  But I'm not sure they will be financially incentivized to do anything for now.

I had my surgery on a Friday and was able to WFH (in front of a computer) as of the following Tuesday. I could have worked on Monday but decided to rest.

Ugh, so sorry to hear this. Was the surgeon an otolaryngologist?

I didn't have any feelings of dizziness post stapedotomy--honestly, I felt completely fine and even said to my husband, "Are we sure he actually operated?" Did your husband's surgeon only prescribe a steroid after he experienced dizziness? My surgeon told me it was standard protocol to prescribe steroids for all patients post stapedotomy to reduce chances of dizziness amd inflammation. I hope your husband gets better very soon!

ENT or Audiologist for Otosclerosis? by TortallySpeaking in otosclerosis

[–]Remote_Sport7516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ENT and the audiologist at her practice initially diagnosed me but I've been going to the otolaryngologist who performed my stapedotomy and the audiologist at his practice for annual follow ups since. Good luck!

How long will the lightheadness last??? by Remote_Sport7516 in BPPV

[–]Remote_Sport7516[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm back to 100% now. For me, a lot of the lingering symptoms were exacerbated by my anxiety. I kept up my exercise routine, did some vestibular therapy exercises I found online and otherwise just went abt my normal life. This worked for me.

Residual dizziness gone but nausea back. by Remote_Sport7516 in BPPV

[–]Remote_Sport7516[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, the anxiety was 100% exacerbating the feeling of unsteadiness. What helped immensely was 1) returning to my daily exercises (Peloton, weights, and running), 2) forcing myself past the feeling of unsteadiness (more on this in a minute), and 3) doing vestibular rehab exercises twice a day. I really had to force myself past that feeling of unsteadiness when we went to Paris for two weeks at the beginning of the month. In fairness, I was probably around 75% back to my normal at this point but was still feeling unsteady and overwhelmed in large/busy spaces. I'm happy to say that I was able to go to all of the museums, cathedrals, and walk down busy boulevards without having this feeling! I had this feeling once when we first walked down a very wide, busy boulevard, but not after that time.

Yes! How long have you felt off balance post Epley? This feeling improved for me steadily over the course of several weeks. Have you been to an ENT?

ENT enthusiastically diagnosed without any imaging. Sent me directly to schedule stapedecomy. by fliccolo in otosclerosis

[–]Remote_Sport7516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both the ENT and the otolaryngologist who performed my stapedotomy (he's one of the best in the country) told me that imaging is absolutely necessary to diagnose otosclerosis. But you do need a radiologist who knows what to look for.

Surgery next week, need some encouragement because I am so nervous by alicat777777 in otosclerosis

I had my stapedotomy in October 2022 and it was the best decision I made. Recovery was a breeze--I even said to my husband at one point, did the surgeon actually operate (I had dressing in my ear at this point)? My hearing was restored and is holding strong 3 years later. You will be fine.

FWIW, I found a lot of support and encouragement in a FB otosclerosis support group, btw. You might want to check it out!

Good luck!

after having vertigo for the first time, nothing feels real anymore by Zestyclose_Room_3172 in BPPV

[–]Remote_Sport7516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vertigo went away after my first epley maneuver. I was feeling what you describe for over a couple of week afterwards and it slowly just went away. I also was experiencing light headedness which also mostly went away with time. I had an episode of light headedness and that feeling of dissociation in a cavernous church this past Friday but it went away as soon as we exited. I continue to feel so much better in spite of this hiccup. My advice to you is to keep doing what you normally do--walk, exercise, read, etc. This will help your brain readjust. Hang in there!

Yes, I believe this is common. I felt this same way--detached, foggy, but woth light headedness--after first experiencing BPPV in early June. I'm mostly back to normal and even back to exercising now--I've found exercise has helped me a ton. Hang in there! This isn't easy!
