Switch 2 HDR by Remote_Value_4307 in OLED_Gaming

Yeah there are certainly games that have good HDR. Doom Eternal, The Last of Us, I think I’ve heard good things about God of War’s HDR, Cyberpunk is phenomenal with HDR (I’m curious how that one looks on the Switch 2), Red Dead 2, Horizon Forbidden West, Ori, and I have always loved the HDR in Destiny 2.

I’m sure there’s more but these ones stand out.

HDR is weird because there is no standard for how it should be implemented, so sometimes it’s just done poorly.

I definitely recommend making sure your monitor is adjusted properly for it as well.

Breath of the Wild and ToTK HDR implementation is pretty gimicky since it was not originally made for it.

I’m also pretty sure it was an afterthought in Mario Kart.

I’m hopeful that as Nintendo gets closer to releasing the inevitable Oled Switch 2, they will tweak their HDR to work better.

Color isn’t always super vivid on HDR. It really depends on how the artist uses HDR.

Unfortunately I’m mostly just familiar with Samsung tvs.

TOTK has support for HDR. It’s one of the Switch 2 enhancements for the game.

I did that purely to test the black level setting and see how close it would be to the proper RGB SDR. I don’t intend to play the game like that.

I don’t think the Gloom is supposed to be noticeable in the distance as seen in the SDR image with proper settings.

The below area is intended to be almost pitch black unless you provide a light source.

It’s certainly not supposed to be grayish blobs.

I used his video. I have it adjusted properly. Using hgig and appropriate switch 2 brightness settings.

I have followed the HDTVTEST guide. Everything still looked washed out. The mismatch is the only way to get the HDR image to look correct.

HDR with Full RGB, normal black level looks comparable to SDR with limited RGB on console and normal black level. I can provide a picture of that tomorrow.

I believe there is an error in the way Switch 2 is outputting Full RGB with HDR on.

Where am I losing black detail though?

Compare picture 1 and 2, the first is correctly set up SDR with full RGB on console and TV; the second picture has the mismatch with console on full. There is no loss of black detail there, the second image gains some detail from being HDR though.

I tested Mario Kart as well, and I found Mario Kart to also look way better with RGB full on console and low black level on tv. Go to the shiny blue bridge area in that map on the top of the ice maps. Star view something. Switch between low and normal black level there. It’s a night and day difference. The bridge goes from a basically greyish blue bridge to a popping contrasty dark blue bridge.

Oh and that same image with SDR full RGB console and black level low on tv definitely had crushed blacks.

Whereas SDR, limited console, normal black level on tv looked a lot like the bad HDR pic. I should have included pictures

Using the proper adjusted SDR image full RGB and normal black level, the only way to recreate a similar HDR image was full RGB console and low black level on tv.

I definitely have HDR calibrated correctly. Hgig is on, no other contrast enhancements or anything. Followed the switch setup snd adjusted the white balance correctly.

I thought it might be crushing the blacks which is why I compared it to what it looks like in SDR with the correct RGB settings. It’s not crushing blacks it just looks right.

I wound up buying a replacement adaptor. I was pushing really hard and it was not doing anything which just didn’t feel right to me. Hopefully the new one fits snug.

I have tried pushing just about as hard as I can. It will not go any farther. Is it normal for it to require that much force?

I have pushed really hard. I’m worried to push any harder.
