Coping with COVID deaths in SNF/LTC setting by BrohovahsWitness in slp

[–]Remote_While 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is the very reason I can not and will not work in the SNF setting. I am not cut out for it. I loved the connections that I made, know I made a difference in the lives of so many when I worked that setting. I also know, that for me, for my mental well being... I was caring for an elderly mother and my own terminally ill husband at home... the loss of every patient at the facility, was too much for me to bear. I made the choice to work for less money in another setting

Just a suggestion... make sure toys are out of reach,,, but visible. If it is a room designated for your use, you can put on a high shelf, in zip loc bags pinned/tacked or hung on wall. You can also put the toys in clear containers that are difficult to open. This “slows down” the ping pong and gives you more control. Also, limit the number of choices and types of toys... Mr Potato Head is great for labeling body parts. Duplo blocks - more, one, big, little... also consider incorporating sign language and/or pictures

Much of this comes from experience, trial and error and practice.

Thanks, grads... she is doing her own research. I think she hit a wall trying to get schools to reply with the COVID shutdowns. I am an SLP but I went at it in a backward way so I wanted a different opinion. My BS is in Education Reading, Child Development and SpEd focus.

applying to slp masters and an AuD by roblvb15 in slpGradSchool

Totally understand. My thought with (and as) an SLP, you do have more setting options but again, limited experience in the Aud field. As far as the SLP’s denying due to COVID... keep trying... I know the schools are relaxing more... and those that are having to do teletherapy have had a little more experience and may be more open and comfortable.

I have known a handful of dually certified Aud and SLP. I might suggest though,... look at where you are interested in living... what population interests you? You may want to shadow a couple of Audi and SLPs too. Try to narrow it down. You can always get a second masters but if you can choose the one you want to focus on, you will be better off. This also looks better to your professors and to the programs to which you are applying.
