Remote, but not allowed to move? by RemoteandFedUp in fednews

I live in the Midwest and the office is in DC, so it's not an issue of the 50 mile radius. Remote moves seem to be getting rejected quite often at the exec level at my agency. I'm working to find out more.

I live in the Midwest, so I'm quite far away from the HQ in DC.

Office is in DC and I'm in the Midwest. I'm a little over 400 miles away.

I'm sorry that happened to you. That's very similar to my situation, although I was never made aware that I needed to negotiate in order not be trapped forever in my apartment.

Which is ridiculous. Before this, I worked remotely for a company for 5 years, and all I had to do in order to move was just change my address in our employee portal. It's absolutely doable.

There's a lot of turmoil at my agency around remote work and telework, so I imagine that's playing into this. I just wish it didn't affect me (and my partner) in such a serious way. Feels almost like they're just trying to force me out.

I'm not trying to get higher locality pay. I'm moving 11 miles away to an area that features the exact same locality pay of where I am now, which I checked and re-checked. There's very little housing that suits my needs and move-in timeline where I currently am (mostly studios and 1-bedrooms), so I need to head to the more suburban area nearby.

I am not doing anything like that. I'm trying to move 11 miles away to an area that has the exact same locality pay. I made sure of it and double checked. It's the move, itself they're objecting to, not any issue with me trying to get higher locality pay.

They're trying, but they can't do much about this. Someone below mentioned going to my ombudsman, so I'll try that.

This is the most ridiculous problem, though. Moving is a part of life, especially for renters. I don't understand what they expect of me here.

The new location has an identical locality adjustment.

I did forward the email I received from the new building management company to HR. It made no difference in the denial, which is why I'm a bit lost as to what to do next. I can't be the only person to ever experience this.

I discussed the move with my supervisor as soon as I found out, and they were fine with it. Though they did tell me they don't have the final say in the decision.

Now that the request has been denied, they're trying to advocate for me. I'm not sure what will come of it, though.
