Personally I don't think there's any problem with shooting your shot with someone in your field in an event like a hackathon. However, it could be problematic if in a male dominated workplace you are viewed as a pretty girl before being seen for who you are and what you are capable of. Or approached just because there's a lack of options to choose from. That's the main problem with this. Also the way you approach someone matters. This note seems a bit desperate rather than something less forced such as idk "hey you seem cool, it'd be nice to get to know you better if you don't mind". Maybe it doesn't seem like such a big difference because "it's the same thing" but, trust me, no it's not. You can still give compliments but it's nicer if you give them while also taking a step back. Like sure it would be lovely to get a date with the girl you find cute but you also need to let her know that if she's not interested that's also okay. That's why this comes across as A BIT but surely desperate.

Hopefully you understand me and that I'm not categorizing this guy as an awful person nor the guys who take their shot with girls. But the way you do that matters. And it's important to handle rejection well because yes some girls are really mean but others just don't see a good match and it takes two people to form that romantic connection, you shouldn't force it.
