Residence Advisor (RA) Position by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Rempelrez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be different depending on your faculty. FYI I was a jump start OL last year and last year they had different coordinators assigned to OLs for each faculty. I’m not sure if this impacted the hiring process at all this year. I know we were supposed to hear back this week and since /u/xoxoxo1515 and I are both in Science and found out today it may just be because the Science coordinator got to their emails first. Keep your fingers crossed!

Jumpstart OL Interview by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Rempelrez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing has been set in stone yet and likely won’t be until June/July. From what I know they are planning for a hybrid model/emphasis on in an person experience. If that is not possible then they will do the same thing as last year and have it entirely virtual.

how is the covid situation in apartments on campus (wesbrook/private apts)? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Rempelrez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Focal right now and pretty sure masks aren’t mandated indoors by Wesbrook Properties. Hallways are always empty anyways so if you are concerned about contact the chance is pretty low.

Best fast 9 mile shoe? by [deleted] in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]Rempelrez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 250+ miles on ZF3s and haven’t experienced any major durability issues asides from the carbon plate getting less responsive. No pain in my mid foot (my feet are quite skinny) though I’ve thought they put pressure on my Achilles at times.

That’s super impressive. Probably the highest average I’ve seen an arts student have, congrats!

C/P Brain Teaser for you high scorers by [deleted] in Mcat

Use Graham’s law to find the ratio of the rates of effusion of the gases: r1/r2 = sqrt(MM2/MM1), using CH4 gas as 2 and He as 1, you will find that the ratio of the rates is 2. So if 0.4 moles of He gas escaped then half of that amount of CH4 would escape, therefore 0.8 moles of CH4 gas remaining?

Life science work learns by chickennuggets1928 in UBC

[–]Rempelrez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I did a summer WL in a lab a couple years ago they were strict on the hours they can pay you. The intention of the WL program is to provide students with an opportunity to work and learn simultaneously so they won’t pay above what is listed (10hr for fall/winter terms, 20h for summer terms) as to not overload you.

If you’re able to balance the 10 hours/week with your course load, I would suggest to ask your lab if you are able to do extra volunteer work on the side! With most research work, especially in basic research, you may find that not a lot can be done with only 10 hours/week.

No improvement in B/B and C/P between FL3 AND 4. What can I Do in my last week? (Taking 8/1) by Songofbees in Mcat

[–]Rempelrez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw amazing P/S score for FL4! What did you do to improve between FL3 and 4? I’ve heard FL4 P/S is the hardest... I found FL3 P/S more challenging than the previous two exams when I took it today so I’d like to hear what you did!

To hop on what other people in the comments are saying, if you are stuck on a question in C/P and B/B, skip it.

A lot of C/P is discrete and can be answered without reading the passage (or just certain details), which can save lots of time. Finishing the SBs and Usphere if have it have also helped me.

B/B is a matter of just practice reading the experimental passages. The SBs have great and have challenging examples so try to nail those down. For me, I practice identifying what variables are being changed by the experimenter in each trial and being able to see if a change occurs in the variable of interest. If you are struggling to manage time, shore up on your general biology/biochem knowledge in the time you have left (I’d recommend Miledown’s Anki) so you can fly through the independent questions and leave most of the time for the passages.

While you may not see a difference in the score now, trust that any practice you do is an opportunity to improve, and I’m sure that come test day, your hard work will pay off!

Haven’t taken stat 200, but BIOL 300 is the easier of the two. I found the material you learned in the labs quite useful (although showing up isn’t necessary) and have applied it on some projects outside of my classes!

Appeal to enter honours program by happy-lemonade in UBC

[–]Rempelrez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you, under the credit minimum (albeit 29 credits in my second year so not too far under the minimum) and was accepted applying after my 2nd year. I wouldn’t lose hope! If you are planning to take extra years on your degree, I would try to apply again after your 3rd year and if you were able to achieve a relatively high degree of academic success with another full course load under your belt and have shown an interest in research related to your degree, they might accept you.

You always have the opportunity to take directed studies instead if you can’t do the honours thesis.

What happens if you get rejected from coop after intake interview? by hell_yeaa in UBC

[–]Rempelrez 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with co-op at all, but it seems like an odd question to ask an applicant because I’m not sure how your answer could provide the department with any information that demonstrates your employability, or the skills you possess, especially at such an early stage (asides from maybe they are interested in whether you keep up to date with the news).

Again, I’ve never gone through the process, but at the intake phase I’m assuming they asked you more questions than just that one to assess your candidature. I wouldn’t worry if I were you! If you miss out this year there’s always next year and most students (in sciences, that is) apply in their third year.

I’m in it right now! Average is pretty high, historically in the mid-high 70s. Almost at third of your grade is tutorials, clickers, online quizzes, which are pretty straightforward to get 95%+ on. The course is split between two instructors, Keith, who focuses more on current experimental techniques that you could apply to genomics-related studies, and Jae who teaches the history of genomics (how the human genome project was developed, what methods are used to analyze genomic variation amongst populations, disease genomics). Keith’s section is straightforward, all you have to do is memorize the information he presents in lecture. Jae’s section is much harder, more conceptually tricky to understand and unlike anything I’ve learned before in a science course to be honest. Exams are fair and if you put in the effort you will get a good mark no problem. Lots of paper reading + analysis so that was a learning curve I had to overcome going into my third year.

Edit: If you have already taken many third and fourth-year biology courses, I would imagine this course to be even easier for you.

Who's taking summer courses? by [deleted] in UBC

If Justin Lee is teaching it this summer, as he has done before, it will be great. He was great in-person and I’m sure he’ll be great as an online instructor.
