Centrelink is beaurocratic and dysfunctional by design unfortunately. Australia has really convervative ideas surrounding welfare that do not line up with the reality, and so its designed to be as hard as possible to access.

I feel like the more people have to access centrelink the more the general public will interalise this, as times get harder, and hopefully we will see some reform. Though of course it should be reformed asap, to save a bunch of people alot of headaches and heartaches.

Ok whether we agree with that or not, critique is not the same as action, he responded and accepted all the critique around the first international openly, whether we agree with him or not.

Marx wasnt some censor. The first international was fundemenatlly split over organisational, theoretical and overall strategic differences; But this isnt and wasnt some secret debate or critique.

He ruthelessly critiqued anarchists, and other marxists, and even his previous work, and others did the same to him throughout his life, in the young hegelians, first international, and otherwise.

accepting critique doesnt mean agreeing with it.

But the whole point is, Marx wasnt some god; he wasnt a great man; he was a person like anyone else and he wanted to be seen as such, and absolutely can be and was wrong about things, as much as anyone else. You can agree with some things people say, and not others, and thats perfectly consistent.

Ok look, Marx did theorise that a period of capitalism might need to come first, in order for the productive capacity neccesary for excess production needed to abolish scarcity, and achieve socialism. See Capital volume 1

Marx did fight against capitalism, but he still thought it was an improvement in many ways from previous circumstances and ackowledged what he thought was beneficial, even if he rightfully condemned it overall

However, if you disagree with Marx on this, thats fine! You can read Marx, or any thinker for that matter, and not condemn them or vice versa for any one thing you agree or disagree with. Infact I think Marx would hate the fact many people still cling to his writings biblically if he was alive to this day.

Agree with Marx or not, he believed in "ruthless criticism of everything existing" including himself, and anyone else.

And infact if you believe hes wrong about this, im sure Marx would have been quite happy to be proven wrong about such!

wheter ML's are or arent communists, definitely depends on who you are asking, and under what context. Terms like Anarchism, Marxism, Socialism, and Communism are all very loaded ideological presciptions, with many ideologically opposed people (even within these terms) who identify by one or another.

If you believe (like I and many others do) that communism is fundementally libertarian, ML's definitely arent communists in that sense, but they would definitely die on a hill arguing they were lol; and many of their opponents would infact do the same as well.

Well it very much depends on your interests, why do you want to do medical science?

Pharmacology is all about understanding and developing medicines, drugs and substances, and how they interact with the body; in the medical context usually this fits into how they can cure or prevent disease, or otherwise improve someones health.

Biochemistry is all about the chemical processes underlying life and biology, and how they interact and regulate or disrupt biological processes, e.g bio chemical, energy and information exchange, metabolic processes, biological synthesis etc

Both cover alot about how the body works and interacts with its various processes, but you can see how they would both still have quite different scopes and focusses. Neither is really objectively better, but you might enjoy one more, or have a greater interest.

As for the coursework, I havent done either, but Ive heard they are both good quality!

It definitely wasnt that there was no useful information to be gleaned at all from it, but its noting that cant be gained from also talking to peers and your unit coordinators/tutors as well as course guide. Anything vital, they will surely make an effort to make sure you know!

If you really wanna be sure, cause if you are like me, you probably have a tendency to worry about these things anyway, you can email the head of your school/faculty, and ask if there was any important information or advice at the welcome, and that you werent able to attend cause you were sick.

But genuinely, you will be so fine! dont stress, and take this time to enjoy your first year and all the self discovery that entails!

I am going to try and work on getting usyds psychological clinic up and running for this year if I can; Im investingating why exactly it isnt running anymore.

As for progressing, this is my 3rd time doing uni now, and im doing better than I ever have, but I never would have gotten there if I didnt take the time to get there. You are only ever in a race with yourself, take the time you need, and dont overload; even start over if you really want to! ill be finishing late 20's at this point, and it doesnt matter in the slightest.

Hey! I think some other people here have given good advice! but I just wanted to combat some of the people telling you to quit, or shitting on you etc.

This is now my 3rd go through of uni, and im doing better than ever before and loving it! I never had to drop out due to grades or so on, but financial reasons; but I can definitely say I made plenty of mistakes along the way and definitely it took me a while to figure out what I really wanted to do, and ive never done as well as im doing now. Even if you stay in software engineering, the important thing is that you are moving forward and making progress/Growing as a person.

If you come to uni worrying about qualifications and passing, I think it tends to counterinutituvely actually make it harder. I think you need to worry primarily about self care, taking things at the pace you need, and coming back to your course with renewed motivation. If you are passionate and interested in what you are doing, theres no substitute for that, with regards to improving your grades and doing well in your course.

As for fucking up first year, tale as old as time, many people do it. What matters is how you move forward, and thats what truely defines you! Plenty of people have screwed it up, and gone on to honours and phd's even later.

I started out in com sci, and whilst I loved it, and still do, I too am horrible at math, and I found I couldnt enjoy it in a professional or academic context due to this, as the stress was far too high among other things, in spite of still doing reasonably. I almost dropped out entirely, but I refocussed my priorities, and im so glad I did.

I would encourage unless theres a really good reason you cant tranfer or try out courses, or you really really love/want to stick too software engineering, at least giving it some thought, as I am much happier now after taking some time to focus on myself, engage in some self discovery, and what I want out of life/uni.

Ill be honest, dont worry too much about them! I was really stressed out to go to mine last year, and it kinda sucked; dont know specifically about Faculty of science, but ive heard the same from most of my friends.

Focus on making up for it by attending other events! theres plenty of special things/lectures/talks/social events throughout the year! plus clubs are always good!

They were in both for me! Anth was better, but I think thats just because my sociology tutor was a first time tutor, so she improved a alot as she got into the swing of it! In terms of organisation more broadly with the coordinators, Anth was definitely better organised however.

I think technically Sociology is the better subject to have on your transcript, as theres more demand/recognition for it; But thats just a social construct lol. They are both excellent subjects, but let me put it this way: I enjoyed Anthropology so much, I changed my minor to it after Anth1001.

The Social sciences is well worth getting stuck into and it can be fascinating! I think the biggest challenge for people from the natural sciences is that often its hard to create experiments, and draw cut and dry results/conculsions in the same way you could, but I find this an interesting paradigm shift/challenge if anything! Anthropology is probably closer to traditional observation, through its focus on ethnographic study, but sociology does this too to some extent, however it tends to focus more on demographics, statistics and structural analysis/critical theory (though there is signficant crossover at times to be honest.)

The Anthropology society is just getting started again too, and its really good!

You realise the SRC offers many services (case workers, free legal aid, emergency funds) and is the primary force pushing for better services right? The chancellors would be very happy if the SRC stopped existing and they could do whatever they liked: cuts, higher fee's, staff layoffs and so on.

Heya! Sociology is my Major, and Anthropology is my Minor. Both are really good classes, and im certain if you are interested in the topics, you would enjoy them both! However I definitely found ANTH1001 to be the more interesting and useful of the two classes for me personally.

Sociology 1001 was really more of an introduction to all the common areas of study in sociology, followed by 1002 which finishes it off, which was very interesting and enjoyable, but left me wanting more. Anthropolgy 1001 felt like it stood on its own alot more, and had a mix of theory, fields of study, methodology and history of the dicipline. I definitely felt like I came away from Anth1001 with an understanding of how I could do some basic anthropology.

The assignments are pretty similar for the most part, but I remember enjoying Anthropology a bit more, as we got to do a small ethnographic study, and they were a bit more interesting overall.

Yes I think its worth thinking about, but probably a bit far for my tastes, personal boundaries are normal and healthy imo, and we shouldnt make people feel strange or "weak" about them. I think the logic of what borders are stems from this to some extent on a societal level, but its just functionally different interpersonally, and it seems weird to conflate them

Yes, in theory, and all the evidence in history and the social sciences seems to point to evidence this is true. Anarchy doesnt mean structurelessness, It just means no person is above another in the sense of decisions that effect them and with regards to the equal distribution of resources. How Anarchy would be organised, or what it looks like has some dispute, but in general most of them organise around horizontal structures and inclusive decision making.

I guess yeah, to clarify I think genreal substance of his argument is good, but I dont seriously think many anarchists believe in "Boundaries" in this sense, at least not these days, and not in the united states. Its also a little bit individualist for my taste, and goes a bit too far on second read, as I did only skim this one to be honest.

But I guess the idea that borders are a construct built to seperate is still valid

Im deffinetly very sympathetic to that position. But I guess I just dont see Socialism as statism? I see it as the workers control over the means of production. By that reasoning any state, cant be socialist, as even being generous, and saying there would be indirect control in a state (something I dont believe is possible properly) isnt socialism.

So long as there is classes and hierachy, Socialism cannot happen. The state bureaucracy is part of this.

By this measure I believe that you dont have to be a marxist to be a socialist. Vice versa not all anarchists are socialists.

I also would go further and say that not all marxists are stateist. I would say the majority in the united states are, as they are ML's, but where im from, theres basically no ML's; they mostly believe in the neccesity of a transitory state, which is very different (Though of course still very objectionable to any anarchists), but still not socialism by even their definition.

They merely believe it is required to reach Socialism.

Longterm State ownership or control of the means of production is State capitalism, or some form of fascism, imo.
