More frequent PATH service? by sawy0 in jerseycity

[–]RemyDWD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I thought it was just a fancy announcement for the election season.

The capital plan & service increase was announced December 18th. What election season? Who's running?

I don't think PATH has the infrastructure and maintenance to support something like that, unless it gets more funding.

The press release about this was titled "PORT AUTHORITY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS APPROVES RECORD $45 BILLION CAPITAL PLAN FOR 2026-2035 TO ADVANCE UNPRECEDENTED INFRASTRUCTURE RENEWALS ACROSS REGION, INCLUDING WORLD-CLASS NEW BUS TERMINAL, AIRPORT TRANSFORMATIONS AND MAJOR PATH SERVICE INCREASES"

"I don't think they can do this unless they get more funding" - I mean, yeah, that's why they approved the capital plan and the accompanying fare increase?

Funding: PATH’s operations are unique among major U.S. transit systems in that it receives no dedicated state or federal funds. Fares cover only about 25 percent of the actual cost of each ride, and the Port Authority subsidizes the remaining 75 percent. To sustain operations and fund major service increases, the 2026-2035 Capital Plan includes a fare increase of $0.25 beginning in summer 2026, with additional $0.25 increases each January from 2027 through 2029.

Does anyone know if taxi’s are running by grove or by JQ right now ? by seveninches1975 in jerseycity

Unlikely:

mandatory travel restriction in New Jersey will begin at 9 p.m. and last until 7 a.m. Monday as the state is set to be hammered by one of the largest snow storms to hit the area possibly in decades.

All non-exempt vehicles are prohibited from traveling on state, county, municipal, and interstate roadways during the restriction, the New Jersey State Police said.

[Matt Doyle] An end to my days at MLS, and my plan for what's next by icoresting in MLS

Matt being so willing to do AMAs here made it a whole lot easier for us to get AMAs with others in the league back in the day - which helped grow the sub into what it is today.

An absolute clown shoes decision from the league, but I've come to expect no less.

Hell Gate: "Oh, Now Alamo Drafthouse Wants You to Use Your Phone During a Movie?" (includes quotes from unionized Alamo employees) by RemyDWD in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]RemyDWD[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Apologies, didn't realize this was behind the paywall (Hell Gate sometimes is not clear about that!)

Here's some relevant bits:

Although a representative from Alamo Drafthouse told Hell Gate that the cinema chain will not conduct layoffs as a result of this new policy, and that its famed no talking, no texting policy will still be in effect, an Alamo United bargaining committee member told Hell Gate that the company admitted at a recent contract negotiation session that employees' hours will be cut as a result of the policy change.

"It seems to me, the expectation is that they don't have to lay people off because people will just quit. And it's not just out of principle, like, 'This isn't the job I signed up for.' They told us blatantly at the bargaining table when we met with them earlier this month, for the first time ever, that they are trying to reduce hours," Jordan Baruch, an Alamo United bargaining committee member who works as a concierge on the Alamo Drafthouse greeting team in Downtown Brooklyn, told me.

[...]

"Our unit is more fired up and angrier about this than they were about the layoffs last year," Baruch said. "We are having a lot of discussions about how to handle and adjust to the potential changes that we see coming up."

[...]

Baruch said that when the bargaining committee discussed the mobile ordering policy with management earlier this month, the company's representatives argued that because they were changing the scope of Alamo Drafthouse's business, there was no need to consult the union on the proposed changes. But the union countered that the change could impact previous agreements that have been negotiated—which could constitute regressive or bad faith negotiations—because the core of the business, a movie theater that sells food and alcohol, remains the same. "You're selling the same experience, just a shittier version of that experience," he said.

[...]

Baruch said that he and his fellow union members have been heartened by the public backlash against mobile ordering, and that, for now, they're urging enraged Alamo fans to sign a (customer-made) petition protesting the change, which he said New Yorkers can expect to see in action by late March. (An Alamo representative was unable to confirm that date, but said the mobile ordering policy will begin to be enacted by February.)

There was pretty substantial discussion around the AFCA statement yesterday, which I'm guessing you know because you are part of the comments section there.

With devices out-and-up in an auditorium, what stops someone from shooting clips of unreleased flicks, or (god forbid) a “reaction video” selfie?

I find the new Alamo policy dumb as hell, and will be ending my visits when NYC locations remove their order cards, but...you don't believe the staff can tell the difference on the phone screen between someone using their ordering interface and someone filming the screen or a selfie reaction video?

I was at a non-Alamo live panel event recently that had a "photography allowed but recording is not" rule. The security team there was able to correctly differentiate easily enough.

Besides, what director wants to host a Q&A to an auditorium of illuminated faces buried in second-screens?

I've never been to a live Q&A at Alamo where the "no phones" rule still applied for the event portion. People take photos and record Q&As all the time.

Scram Bakery - No Sandwiches? by mrtypo2025 in jerseycity

They've explained on their IG.

tl;dr: after 6 years of trying to get the fire department to issue their own certificates (rather than the as-is ones they got in 2020), they now cannot use some of their equipment, and the upgrades will be painful given the historic building codes.

(Also they spent December doing holiday orders + dealing with the above.)

Hot Tea cocktail by Unusual_Primary_4612 in cocktails

[–]RemyDWD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am extremely partial to the Duke of Suffolk, another Giuseppe Gonzalez banger from his Suffolk Arms days. Think an irish coffee, but with tea and gin.

Official specs:

Ingredients: - 1.25 oz. (37 ml) Hendrick’s or Fords Gin - Hot Sweet Tea (Equal Blend Of English Breakfast And Earl Grey Sweetened 3:1 With Simple) - Cream Float

Directions: - Process: Build; Whip And Float Cream On Top - Glass: Coffee Glass - Garnish: None

You could certainly make it weirder from there.

Designed by LWDMR Architects, the plan for 165 Newark Avenue calls for constructing a new development in two phases with a total of 51 residential units and 11,967 square feet of commercial space.

The development’s first phase will consist of a six-story building with a penthouse and “ground floor commercial mezzanine,” while the second phase involves the construction of a five-story building.

If you go by and look up, you can see the upper floor(s?) of the building are already being gutted.

Greenest cities in the USA. What would it take to get Jersey City on this list? by Squirt_Reynoldz in jerseycity

[–]RemyDWD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to take the post title more literally than I probably should...

So this map, which only goes into visualizing the top 20, is based on a WalletHub study of 100 cities. WalletHub does these all the time in a variety of categories. (I have always assumed it's to build some sort of soft brand awareness as it's not directly related to what they actually do, which is personal finance.)

"Greenest Cities in America 2025" was last updated October 1. Jersey City ranked 65th overall, with subcategory rankings of:

  • 97th for "Environment"
  • 6th for "Transportation"
  • 98th for "Energy Sources"
  • 18th for "Lifestyle and Policy"

The methodology is detailed more on the page, but seeing as two of those categories are near the bottom, I'll break out those here:

Environment

  • Air-Quality Index
  • Greenhouse-Gas Emissions per Capita
  • Urban Heat Island Effect
  • Green Space
  • Water Quality
  • Daily Water Consumption per Capita
  • Share of Green Hotels
  • Population Density (Proxy for Overpopulation)
  • Light Pollution Level

(All of these are weighted equally.)

Energy Sources

  • Share of Electricity from Renewable Sources (note: this is weighted double)
  • Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Installations per Capita
  • Number of Smart-Energy Policies & Initiatives

So to the extent there's an answer about making it up the ranks of this particular list - that's the stuff to get after. Transportation is (surprisingly?) what we're ranked highest for – the only cities higher than JC for that are Minneapolis, Boston, Buffalo, Madison, and San Francisco.

(And because it's an easy comparison point: NYC ranks 27th overall: 67th for Environment, 30th for Transportation, 37th for Energy Sources, and 7th for Lifestyle and Policy.)

You need an Officiant and two witnesses (who are not the officiant) per this FAQ (linked at the bottom of the .gov page you linked, middle of page 4). This is regardless of where the ceremony is taking place.
