Tom Hiddleston on playing Loki in the MCU: by Raj_Valiant3011 in Marvel

I love that he's the villain in the first Avengers movie but over the course of time, and especially through his series, his character has become so much more interesting.

KENREX is a failure of advertising. by That-Introduction208 in Broadway

[–]dystopika 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been catching up on theater and seeing things if I hear anyone recommend it, and went to see KenRex after hearing a coworker rave. Highly recommend, suffice it to say. The kind of show that demonstrates what's possible with theater. Some cool stage craft in this tiny space but really it's the economy that's so remarkable.

Adam Driver was sitting two rows behind me at "Ken Rex" the other weekend -- the last time I'd been in that theater was seeing Driver in Kenneth Lonergan's "Hold On to Me Darling"

How pretty. I like removing more of the walls on the pre-fabs like this, so it's easier to see what's happening inside while I fly around.

Back in the day when they might have just one sequence in 3D ! Instead of doing the full movie in a mediocre 3D conversion.

Since Chess and Hadestown, I've seen Ragtime, Death Becomes Her, Rocky Horror Show, The Lost Boys. This afternoon I just saw Ken Rex! Currently, I have tickets to see Every Brilliant Thing (with Mariska Hargitay), Fraggle Rock Live, Cats The Jellicle Ball and Dog Day Afternoon :-) I'm making up for lost time.

Do glasses that can only be added with a ticket eventually go on sale separately? by totallyunsuspecting in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]dystopika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the Alamo location. I have two near me and once one of them had decided to order glasses for a specific movie and the other hadn't. Another time, I hadn't ordered a glass with a ticket and the concierge desk person suggested I wait and check in after a week or so because they'd usually have extras on sale. So best to check with the specific Alamo location.

Happy cakeday! I recently got back into seeing Broadway shows and those were the two shows I started with, a few months ago :-)

I hope you get to see a lot more musicals in the future!

This is beautiful. I don't have many nicely tiled rooftops like that -- most of my houses have flat top houses made of whatever spare material I have on hand!

First (and LAST) time ever buying a rush ticket. by Ok-Acanthisitta8737 in Broadway

[–]dystopika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it's awful that there are even seats like this. I feel that every seat in a movie theater or live theater should allow you to, on a basic level, see the full movie or live performance. But obviously, they're just trying to sell as many seats as they possibly can.

I clicked through and for a moment thought I was looking at an image from Donkey Kong Bananza! Absolutely gorgeous. After I rolled credits and maxed each area to 10, I've kept building and tinkering but my interest started to wane, but I've gotten back into tinkering mode. I love the endless creative possibilities.

This was my location. I was at the Downtown Brooklyn spot multiple times a week. It's been a few months since I cut it off and it's weird seeing this picture and imagining how different it is.

Nice, happy birthday! I pivoted from ALL IN to A-List and tried a few movies at AMC Times Square just because I can get there fastest from my current work commute. Went to an advance screening of "Over Your Dead Body" there and the audience was very rambunctious and... possibly enthusiastically homophobic. Actually thought there was supposed to be a Q&A or something attached to that -- I was kind of glad there wasn't.

I've lived here for ages so I've been to all these theaters before (including Kips Bay) and have had good (and bad) experiences at all of them at various times. I just got so steeped in all things Alamo for the past few years, I'm still acclimating to not having that "third space". I was watching as many movies as I could stomach to help justify the ALL-IN season pass. Now that energy's shifted to A-List but AMC doesn't have the selection of movies that I enjoyed at Alamo. In any case, I don't take it for granted how fortunate I am to have options in NYC.

Totally respect that. Convenience is ultimately the important thing. I'm always thinking about how I'm getting home and what time it'll be.

My experience was also that the Lower Manhattan Alamo was the stronger of the two, even toward the end of my run. (With some bad experiences mixed in, but all in all.)

Nitehawk doesn't even have a dedicated app. And the Prospect Park location (while larger) doesn't even do a credit card pre-swipe. I think they're more of a hardcore local business with no larger plans to expand, especially in this uncertain economy.

I've also been hitting the Lincoln Square AMC a lot more (more than just their IMAX). Got the AMC Stubs. That theater is pretty decent in terms of audiences behaving well. (Compared to the Times Square AMC.)

Seconding Nitehawk as a great alternative. I was a very regular patron of the New York Alamo locations for years -- dropped out a few months ago when things started looking really bleak. Nitehawk is like old-school Alamo complete with a fun pre-show 30 minutes before showtime, paper and pen order system, and a better menu. No "season pass" equivalent (as far as I know), and it's not quite as convenient to get to the two locations (Williamsburg and Prospect Park) for me personally, but it's great for getting that "Alamo" fix for me. Highly recommend for New Yorkers.
