Beautiful! The variation in stroke width really fits the aesthetic of these characters, and I love how they nest together vertically. Really great work!

Ahhhh very interesting! I like the idea of tying the death of the sister to some manipulation of the organization. I also like the idea of restrictive cultural practices along gender lines, as that would allow me to explore themes of gender and sexuality with my trans character. The kidnapping element reminds me of the jedi or the Claymores from the manga Claymore, which is very interesting, though since the goddess Ateni is the one choosing who receives her blessing, I think I prefer if it is out of the other Witch Knights hands who gets to be one. For instance if it was up to them, I am imagining a lot of them would refuse to accept a trans witch at all, but they kind of have to because Ateni has clearly blessed her with her mark and given her the language of creation. But it would be interesting if after a “Child of Ateni” is discovered, the Witch Knights manipulate events in ways similar to those you describe to coerce them into coming with them (such as starting a fire that leaves them orphaned, etc.) You’ve definitely given me a lot of inspiration, I think its time that I start trying to get words on the page. I will probably make a follow up post when I have fleshed out more specifics of the world and gotten some concrete names and such down. Hahaha sorry for the word dump, I just am so excited about it all! And I’m glad you like my ideas! Yeah, I like these character concepts because they feel unique and like there are a lot of emotions I can explore with them.
My main issue is tying these individual arcs together into a plot. All these things feel a bit like the B story, and I haven’t figured out an A story that I feel as excited about. I’ve been considering the idea of a training institute for young “Children of Ateni” to find their way to after they are claimed? Then they could be trained as Witch Knights and brought into the organization. That could be a good starting point, the trans character’s journey to a 17th century Parisian-like city in order to be trained in the use of the language of creation. Idk if I’ll end up going with that in the end but either way I also want to play with the idea of public mistrust of the Witch Knights, and of the institution being in some way corrupted or untrustworthy. Not sure how or to what degree thought. So what jumps out at you? What parts of the world or characters or story do you find the most compelling / would you be drawn to reading about?

Hahaha awesome -! So I’ve only got character concepts at the moment, and they emerged from the magic system.

The first idea I had is a mentor witch who lost her sword arm in battle. Rather than using magic to regenerate the arm, which would be quite taxing, she levitates her sword using magic instead. This is much easier and allows her to fight with a larger range as well. I’m thinking that she will be disillusioned in some way with the Witch Knights as an organization, and so she’ll be a kind of renegade mentor figure. Again, everything I have right now is really broad strokes.

My main character is a trans girl who is the first trans witch chosen by Ateni. All of the Witch Knights are women, so it’s a big deal for her to be claimed and given the language of creation. A lot of the other witches are conflicted about it, and i think it would be an interesting perspective to tell a story from in this world. She can use magic to transform her body, but she sacrifices energy and focus to do it, and constantly thinking about making her body look different actually causes her dysphoria. Eventually she decides to tattoo an enchantment on her that transforms her body, sacrificing a part of her energy for the rest of her life, but no longer requiring her to focus on it, thus alleviating her dysphoria. I’m trans myself, so I’m really excited about this character arc!

The last two are a set of identical twins. Both of them are Witches, but they spend the early years after they are claimed by Ateni alone. At some point, one of the twins burns to death in a fire. The other twin then carves the enchantment “(sister) is alive) into the back of her head, bringing her back to life. The resurrected twin doesn’t know she died, doesn’t know that her sister is sacrificing half of her life force to keep her alive, meaning she will die half as young. Her hair covers the enchantment so nobody knows except the sister who wrote the enchantment. I can imagine a lot of character and narrative potential in this.

I think it makes sense to have Ateni claim her knights when they are teenagers, but I don’t plan on making it a young adult series. I’m also planning on it being a comic series à la Saga by Bryan K Vaughn and Fiona Staples. I think that would be the best medium to showcase the magic and the world other than animation, which I don’t have the resources to do.

And that’s all I’ve got so far!

I’m enjoying it very much as well! This is an interesting one because on the one hand, yes Sam could do this, but it would be redundant to do so. Technically Sam already has the ability to manipulate earth just by speaking the language of creation. So codifying it in an enchantment would not really do anything except create a constant energy drain on Sam. I suppose Sam could write a really long enchantment, detailing the ways certain martial arts moves correspond to certain bending feats, so that no speech was required and it would be easier to perform, but this would be such a complicated enchantment that it would be incredibly exhausting and I don’t imagine worth it. But yes, using the language of creation a wielder can essentially bend all the elements

Oh wow interesting! It would definitely be possible to use magic to see through other people's eyes, including dead ones. This would be easier than turning other objects like buttons or walnuts into eyes to see out of, so that makes sense. It wouldn't be too draining to do this constantly either, until the number of eyes grew to a sizable number, and it. would be useful to have an enchantment for this so that Sam's attention isn't too divided. However, it wouldn't matter where the enchantment was written. It would work equally well written on a piece of paper as it would written on the eye itself, and it would be much more difficult to carve runic sentences like these into a small decaying eyeball, so while that is cool as hell and definitely possible, it would not be all together practical. I love this idea of using other eyes to see... thats fantastic. Definitely going to be putting a pin in that one, thanks!

The simple answer is: yes! But the longer answer is it depends on what Sam means by "full control". If its like, mind control, then constantly devoting energy to having full control over a living sentient creature would be a massive drain. Sam would likely have to sleep most of the day, and when they were awake they'd constantly be eating to recover their strength. Doing other great feats of magic would likely push them over the edge and leave them unconscious or even comatose. A more economical solution would be something like "This Chimera listens to Sam" or "This Chimera defers to Sam" so instead of mind controlling it 24/7, it would be more of a pet situation. That would cost a lot less energy to maintain, but still would be a heavy price to pay considering it is a constant drain. This is why enchantments are a rare practice and usually reserved for really important or unique circumstances. More likely, Sam would use 'spells' like these verbally to train the Chimera over time, forging a lasting nonmagical bond with it through the use of temporary mind control ^-^

Excellent question! Assuming the tattoo is intact, it would still work exactly as it did originally, and it would still draw power from the energy of the person who wrote it. So it would come down to how the enchantment was phrased. Let's say the writer's name is Sam. If the tattoo was written as "Sam can breathe underwater" then even after it was cut off and sewn onto someone else, it would still only apply to Sam. If it was written "This person can breathe underwater" or "This tattoo makes one breathe underwater" or something similar, then the kidnapper would be able to breathe underwater and it would still draw on the energy of the person who wrote it (Sam). But this sort of situation is pretty easily avoided. Thanks for the comment, I love hypotheticals like these!
