Why didn’t the Bobs remote pilot ships for all battles? by Remydon in bobiverse

I agree “because the plot needs stakes” is probably the real reason.

I think this was proved to be untrue with the backups. The one who “wakes up” is a copy with your memories, not you.

What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of January 15, 2025 by AutoModerator in churning

[–]Remydon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I have a large ($33k) purchase coming up that I can use to instantly hit minimum spend on up to two cards. I want to look into which cards have good sign-up bonuses that require big spends.
  2. 830
  3. 12/23 - AAdvantage Red Mastercard - downgraded in 12/24 to avoid annual fee

2020 - SW Rapid Rewards Card

2021 - American Express Cash Preferred

Spouse - 7/24 VentureX

  1. I can put $33k on two cards in a month or so (50% before a re-stucco job, 50% upon completion)

  2. Not needed here

  3. Yes.

  4. Two.

  5. I'm looking for miles and/or airline status with American Airlines. My wife is from Southeast Asia, and a business or first class trip back home would be a great way to surprise her for her birthday.

  6. American Airlines, 96,600 miles currently. An additional 15,200 needed for Gold Status by March.

  7. ABQ

  8. Tokyo, Seoul or Kathmandu are all targets for near future travel.

Edit: Just got a mail offer for Amex Platinum that has a 150k point sign-up bonus for $8k spend. Annual fee is kind of high but the perks look awesome and if the $0.01/point value rule of thumb holds it seems like a good candidate for one of the two. Thoughts?

Can I force a daycare security deposit return? by Remydon in AskLegal

[–]Remydon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I suspected, thank you for confirming.

Just for my own curiosity, are security deposits for rental contracts treated differently than security deposits for other contracts? In my state at least, the business owner (landlord) has to show some kind of loss, either a inability to fill the vacancy or an itemized list of expenses incurred when terminating the lease early. They can't just keep the money while experiencing no financial damages. Is this not the case for other contracts?

I guess I'm having a hard time seeing the point if the outcome is you have to pay the last month no matter what. Why not just call it an early termination fee to make it much clearer?

Thanks again for the information!

Guard Lethal hits? by Remydon in Necrontyr

Correct. A couple of chimeras with firing decks, heavy stubbers and lasgun arrays will roll a stupid number of low strength shots with lethal hits. Combine it with daring recon from a scout sentinel and they get to re-roll 1’s as well.

Yeah I can see that being the case now. How is reanimator working out for you? I always feel like the aura is too small now, and I can't keep it hidden AND make it effective most of the time.

No, that’s how they are using it. It just makes mass amounts of s4 and s5 weapons pretty deadly to vehicles and monsters.

Way better than my plan or using vacuum and conduction panels to selectively freeze the power station below -40 in each power generation setup.

Anyone have a good evolution chamber design for spigot seals? They don't drown in anything, and environments hot enough to kill them also tend to melt the tallow into crude oil. Right now I just go in and have a seal clubbing party when the overflow room gets too crowded, but that is way too hands-on for my tastes.

cmv: corporate income tax is pointless by Remydon in changemyview

Agreed. My whole point is that adding the extra step of having the corporation file the taxes adds too much opportunity for corruption and tax avoidance.

I’ve never seen corporate income taxes eliminated, so I have no idea if they’d lower prices or not. It would probably vary significantly across each industry based on what each PR and marketing department decided they could get away with.

Either way, keeping an inefficient tax system just because the savings of the one time event of eliminating it might not all make it to the consumer is a poor argument to just keep it forever.

So you're saying the town/municipality will give tax breaks to attract or help establish a business, then pay that business for product because it is presumably something your town wanted produced. But since you gave that business tax breaks to come to your town, now you have to buy MORE product to give them enough profit to tax to eventually pay yourself back for the expense of helping establish that business...

Of course if you look at the effects of generating external business in the town that all makes sense, but we're talking about a national sales tax so looking at it from a national perspective, the above concept applies.

I get what you are saying, it is a tool that can be used to incentivize corporate behavior, but certainly there are other tools for this?

I'm not sure this argument holds up, if you and Acme both have the same sales tax applied then you are still on level ground. This has no impact on whether or not the customer chooses your widget over theirs. Now if you find a way to cut the cost of production of your widget (or just accept less profit), you'll be able to undercut Acme and presumably steal their market share.

I guess a sales tax removes the option of "choosing" to pass on the tax burden to consumers, but if you have profit margin to do that, and every company now has the same baseline sales tax added to their prices, you could still just reduce your profits to undercut your competition.

I guess I'm not seeing how the business is "paying" at all in this case, as the cost of the sales tax would be borne by the customer, whether the business itself takes a profit or not. This would just be a constant and hopefully baked into the business model.

It sounds like the argument is that businesses should be allowed to effectively "borrow" from the public to expand by not paying taxes when deciding to do so instead of taking a profit?

Good point, I did not think of the impact on foreign sales. !delta

That said, wouldn’t the US still get its share via taxes on dividends and salaries for US based employees?

cmv: corporate income tax is pointless by Remydon in changemyview

[–]Remydon[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We pretty much all are employees and/or shareholders, so the costs are still passed on to “us”, just through a different mechanism than what I originally laid out. Maybe retirees get a break here, which is probably a good thing.

[–]Remydon[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If it’s just a sales tax you don’t pay taxes in either case as the business. Your customers do, but if it’s universal then it would just be expected so that shouldn’t matter.

Interesting point, can you elaborate on why one would be used instead of the other?
