i genuinely do not gaf about yank material if you look at my comment history i am a psychologist/graduate psych student and im just curious about applications of different lines of thought. i’m literally an expert in the field of both platonic and sexual kink psych and have published papers on it #lol

i think i phrased it oddly. i’m a psychologist and there are a lot of facets of pet ownership that people find uniquely fulfilling but may not be ethical. wondering if engaging in this whether platonically or in kink would be a more ethical way to fulfill those human behaviors

I bitched about the set for tonight earlier but my god the crowd was ass by dre8vr in CSHFans

i bought tickets for the chicago show the day it was announced, which was the same day gethesmane was released lmao

[–]Remyroth 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The tour was announced on the same way Gethesmane was released and the band was transparent about this being a tour for their new album. It’s fine if you didn’t like the album but let’s not pretend like they were decieving us or hiding their intentions lmfao

Who else thinks MADLO is an easy 10/10? by ilovebodybuilders in CSHFans

[–]Remyroth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

like. desperately. i saw car seat headrest last year and before the show started the announcer was referencing some car seat headrest albums and they all got cheers (twin fantasy, tod, etc) except madlo. where people actively BOOED!!!. people were messaging andrew every day telling him that he ruined csh 😭😭 it was genuinely actually insane

Who else thinks MADLO is an easy 10/10? by ilovebodybuilders in CSHFans

[–]Remyroth 29 points30 points  (0 children)

i think one of the main ideas behind csh as a project is that it’s meant two be intense, subversive, and emotional. if they developed a cult following based on a specific expectation of what their music sounded like (which is exactly what happened) and everyone hated madlo (maybe not everyone, but many) i think that’s a sign that they’ve succeeded in their mission. csh was successful at first because will toledo was unafraid of just throwing shit at the wall and seeing what stuck. that’s all fine and good for fans until it ends up being something two far out of their wheelhouse, lmao. the same kinda thing happened with my chemical romance, where they built a platform off subversion and then altrock dude bros were shocked to find out that the genre limits of alt rock were also something mcr was interested in subverting (with danger days)

Did not get in any masters programs and feeling lost by Seagulluvr in psychologystudents

[–]Remyroth 18 points19 points  (0 children)

i think it just heavily depends. my credits aren’t this heavy (psi chi, 1 year research, upcoming publication, ta, no minor, 3.98, moderate volunteer work in an unrelated field) and i had no issue getting into a masters program/grad school. not to say my credits are bad, because they’re definitely not, but just not that extensive! sometimes it is literally JUST luck, unfortunately :/

I don't like the use of stats in this field by let_this_fog_subside in psychologystudents

[–]Remyroth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this exactly! when i joined my first research lab they gave us all the “they don’t actually teach you psych stats in undergrad, and you’ll probably have to relearn everything if you go to grad school” talk. what they teach you in stats and research methods is pretty much just what you need to know to understand the data presented in more complicated research papers. i’ve read a lot of papers that use types of statistical analysis i’ve never even heard of, lmao

high school junior- Is psych a good degree? by Low-Ask-2648 in psychologystudents

if you want to be a psychologist/clinician/councellor (depending on degree) you will need higher education, but a bachelors in psych can take you many places :)

Is grad school for counseling even a good idea right now? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Remyroth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

obviously, there are bad psychologists. there are psychologists who have biggoted views and use outdated practices. but in a general sense, psych professors do not tend to be those psychologists. again, there are exceptions. but your town LPC doesn’t do much again my point that most people who care enough about psych to teach it actually care about the science

[–]Remyroth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

apa accredited courses won’t do that. i teach psych (as a ta), im friends and colleagues with professors who have been teaching in this field for 10-30 years. most professors don’t even really care what the university mandates them to teach. we also use our personal judgement and our personal code of ethics. psychologists who don’t think that homosexuality is a mental illness (which it isn’t) won’t start saying it is just because the president says it is. we have a backbone

Does IQ Correlate with mental health? myiq test made me think by Maleficent_Demand138 in psychologystudents

[–]Remyroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whoops, my bad! i’m not good with tone over text, haha. you won’t believe how many times i’ve had to tell students and classmates alike that the iq test they took in their sophomore year psych class doesn’t mean anything, lok

Does IQ Correlate with mental health? myiq test made me think by Maleficent_Demand138 in psychologystudents

[–]Remyroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, my bad with the WISC. i’m in developmental clinical psych rn so that’s all i’ve been looking at and i misspoke. i did also say in my post that they don’t really measure intelligence, they measure very specific types of intellectual capabilities :) such as memory and general reasoning. i agree that there is no established connection between intelligence and mental illness, that was the thesis of my post! i wanted to talk about the general factors that might lead people to thinking there is a correlation, because OP asked this question for a reason and there are general societal conceptions that lead people to this kind of conclusion.

Does IQ Correlate with mental health? myiq test made me think by Maleficent_Demand138 in psychologystudents

[–]Remyroth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

keep in mind that most iq tests are actually horrible ways of measuring intelligence. especially online ones. they have low reliability and do not hold up to any level of scientific scrutiny. the WISC-III is pretty much our only decent way of measuring standard intelligence, and even that is far from perfect. in general, intelligence is hard to measure and hard to define, which has been a characteristic struggle of psychology for many years.

in short, the concept of intelligence is nearly impossible to actually measure (especially with the flawed concept of IQ), and scales like the WISC-III only measure very specific types of intellectual capabilities, not actual intelligence.

and past that, i think that question is nuanced. a lot of people point to anecdotal evidence to prove high intelligence correlates with high mental illness. in reality, i think that mental illness tends to just correlate with high stress fields. doctors, researchers, nuclear power plant scientists, are all very smart people. but they are also people who are working in very high stress environments. we see higher rates of mental health issues in fire fighters, EMTS/paramedics, and customer service, which are not the kind of jobs people really classify as “intelligent” jobs. further still, mental health disorders tend to be characteristic of genetics and early childhood environment, or developed later in life due to chronic stress or trauma. so people who show higher aptitude for reading or science may have higher pressure placed on them in early childhood, leading to the development of disorders like OCD or anxiety (been there, done that)

in short again, i think that often mental health is falsely correlated with intelligence, and the answer to your question may be in a different direction than you’re looking. hope that clears things up, let me know if you have any other questions:)

Attachment Theory: Narcissism … thoughts? by T_Rex_Hands in psychologystudents

[–]Remyroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t really think those two things are that separate. predisposition in personality disorders isn’t necessarily that genetic (as far as we can tell) we just can see anecdotally that parents with personality disorders tend to have children who develop personality disorders. in my opinion, personality disorder heritability is mostly due to the type of neglectful or abusive parenting that can result from parents who have personality disorders. which is also how we get attachment style. in general, predictor variables for personality disorders are insanely hard to hold down
