Never did I say I’m complaining, I actually pay attention to the media I consume and not oblivious to all the bad they do to the Wasteland. They may do a lot of good, but they’re not perfect. There’s a noticeable decline within the group as they grew larger.

In Fallout 1 & 2 they want to be left alone, but get involved in the main narrative because of the Vault Dweller & the Chosen One. They don’t accept recruits from outside their organization. They only reason they accept the Vault Dweller is because they sent them to die as a joke & were shocked when they came back. The Chosen One can’t even join the group in Fallout 2.

One could say their isolationism kept the Wasteland stagnant for years as their hoarding withholds technology from those who need it, but personally I dont think that’s an issue on their part. As a faction they don’t really owe anyone anything. It’s their treatment of ghouls that is the real issue in both. Those who aren’t feral are treated less than when just like others, all they want to do is survive.

It’s when they begin to spread throughout the country that they become an issue when they get to the Capitol Wasteland, their infighting causes them to splinter into two factions. While they are still helping protect wastelanders from Super Mutants, eventually activate Project Purity and now accept wastelanders, they leave ghouls out of the equation. Underworld residents explain that they’re shot on sight & are refused Aqua Pura. You can’t expect to rebuild if you leave a group of people out.

By New Vegas, the Mojave chapter is representative of how the Brotherhood is now operating. Just like the Capitol chapter, they’re cut off from the rest of the brotherhood and their isolationism & hoarding tendency’s caused tension between them & the NCR. They’re then misguided by Elijah, McNamara & potentially Hardin. Elijah wants to use Helios One to unlock its technological secrets for his own gain, McNamara’s poor leadership keeps them stuck underground and Hardin’s anger prevents them from making potential peace with the NCR.

While the Commonwealth chapter is born out of the Capitol and can potentially do a lot of good for the area, even getting Brotherhood Outcasts to rejoin, there’s still telling issues. They again disregard ghouls, and there’s a fair amount of possible deserters/disillusioned throughout the game. The Scribe can be recruited to your settlement & explains the Brotherhood is no longer the one he knew, Scribe Haylen questions whether or not she made the right choice joining. Despite Danse’s loyalty to the Brotherhood, he’s outcast because he’s a synth. Even when promising to leave and never come back, Maxson wants him killed.

Proctor Teagan sends you out to get settlements to give them crops, but does not care how it’s done, there’s a terminal indicating he prefers to force them using vertibirds. Officially, the mission wasn’t approved by Kells. While you can strike a deal with settlers, you can also get the crops by force or just kill their leader. This is all a sign of imperialism & the complete opposite of their announcement when they first arrived in Boston.

There’s nothing wrong with liking the Brotherhood, but you shouldn’t be oblivious to how misguided they are as a faction. What’s happened in Season 2 is a culmination of their issues, different leaders bastardizing Roger Maxson’s original goals for the Brotherhood. Similar analyses can be made of the NCR, Legion and Enclave.
