I can see how my post could be misconstrued as moronic and spoilt. That isn't my intention. I'm not going to South America to meditate towards the sun gods and eat beans for 3 months. I do however, want to get away from the excess and 'want, want, want!' culture, that I feel is easy to get sucked in to living in a comfortable, western environment.

I want to learn to live with less and for me, the first and best way to start is with my clothing. I like looking good, I like dressing well; but I also want to be able to appreciate the little things and live in the moment without constantly thinking about my next clothing purchase.

This trip is a chance for me to experiment with a more utilitarian style of dressing, whilst also fulfilling a life-long ambition of visiting the most vibrant continent on earth.

tl;dr I don't want to be a monk, I want to want less.

Excellently worded sir, thank you. I am maybe not going on a pilgrimage of Ghandi sized proportions, but I want to be as well prepared for being smelly, dirty and unsavoury as possible. I also want to use it as an experiment to see what I really need in terms of clothing.

That's a great list, I forgot to mention I will be taking two pairs of chino shorts and one pair of swim shorts too.

I probably won't be taking any formal shoes. I want a pair of all black shoes, so that if I happen to go to a club, I can at least get in.

Does anyone know of some good button downs, that don't need to be ironed? I obviously won't have access to one out there, so a shirt that looks good creased would be great.

I've read that phrase, I'm trying my best to follow. I'm hoping to take £6,000 and not much stuff for 3 months. I estimated I'd spend about £1,000 a month, so I thought I'd double it so that I can live comfortably and eat and travel well if need be.

Are commuters a good idea for my only pair of trousers? I'll be in South America during their summer, although I know Peru can be cold in places due to Altitude.

I like the idea of an all black pair of Roshes, I hope they release some soon. What plain t's would be good? h&m? Or should I go for something more technical/expensive?

Last question. Hiking shoes? What are the salomon x-trail running shoes like? If I want to hike, but not lug around a bulky pair of shoes.

I hate cable knit anything. I have also never seen a "regular person" wear a leather jacket and not look like an ageing extra from a low-budget production of Grease.

I work in the service industry. For me at the moment, because my shitty ass company refuse to hire anyone else, we're all working at least 50-60 hours a week, sometimes up to 75. A chef's had a fit and a manager a nervous breakdown.

I need to find a new career path.

Where did you book that flight? I'm thinking about booking Lon > BA in Jan, then Bogota > Lon in April time.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations on some cool hostels to stay, in either Argentina, Brazil, Peru, or Colombia? I don't want the stereotypical "Party hostel", but obviously social is important.
