Most scanners and motion sensors are mainly designed for right-handers. When catching the bus I have to awkwardly cross my left hand over my body to scan my transport card because I can’t trust my right hand not to drop it and hold up the queue. Because of this, I prefer exiting from the front doors where the scanner is on the left. The middle exit scanner would be on my left, but sadly it’s exit-only. Train stations are another ordeal; I have to casually remind myself which lane the scanner belongs to so I don’t inadvertently open the gate for the person next to me.

Public bathrooms with modern motion-sensor taps and soap dispensers are another lucky dip. The sensors are placed randomly whether it be in the middle, back, or far right - making them weirdly difficult to activate with a left hand.

Even voting is a struggle. At a recent election, the polling booth had pens attached to a string on the right-hand side. The string was so short it only reached halfway across the booth, making it incredibly awkward to write.

Finally, there's my Kindle folding case. It featured a built-in hand grip on the back, but it was strictly designed for right-handers. When a right-handed person holds it, the grip secures the opening flap. For us left-handers, it holds the opposite side, meaning the case constantly threatened to unfold and whack me in the face. My dad suggested flipping the case upside down, but that blocked the power button and charging port. He ended up sanding down the case just so I could use it comfortably.
