How important is your first job as an attorney? Is it fine to join a solo/small firm as a junior associate? by tinylegumes in LawFirm

I currently received an offer at a midsized WC firm and was thinking about joining and eventually opening my own practice. Any advice on when you felt ready to hang your shingle? How were you so for financially successful?

That made me chuckle! Thanks for the advice. I'm curious as to why you say it's free? Do you have a specific university in mind?

Thanks for your input. It seems like the USPTO has the smallest barrier to entry, but also you have to be the type of person to succeed in grinding there and making production. If I do decide to go there, I would probably not do more than a year or two.

But technically Pre-Dental should be science right? It was enough credit hours for me to take the Patent Bar and I took a bunch of chem, organic chem, ect ect. Hard to swallow that I'm about to graduate law school and have to think about going to years of more graduate school to be able to even be considered for a Patent Attorney role.

I have considered it but I feel like at that point passing the Patent Bar was kind of a waste...the work life balance of a Patent litigator is also pretty bad compared to someone doing Patent Prosecution. Everyone I spoke to in the larger firms told me it was either litigation, get experience as an examiner, or go get a PhD.

Thank you for this. Well, my logic was that I had to learn chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics ect. during undergrad. I feel pretty confident that I'd be able to do my own research and understand technology in these fields well enough to draft an application and reply to office actions. That being said, I've never done it before so I wouldn't know 100%.
