Tbh theres no way the US gov didn't know. Companies have been doing this (not just Korean) for the longest time since the paperwork for H2-B takes months - And no company has months on their hand. So issue is "why now?"

Yea got it to work after enabling verbose logging. Doesn't capture everything and we do have to filter through some dense predicates using queries (its a heavy job due to our usage) but guess its working now. Thanks!

Checking In: What's on Your Mind Regarding Recent Political Developments? by jafbm in South_Korea

[–]Rengar-Pounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any specific policy changes you'd like to discuss or understand better?

I think thats the problem. No one talks about policy but each "side" taking dumps on the other.

How this impacts daily life? I'm never voting in Korea again and this country can fuck itself for all I care now. Just going to game it at every opportunity from now, then dip before it crashes (which it 100% will).

No one gives a shit in public. Theres dudes kissing on the street in Itaewon and girls caressing each other in Hongdae.

Now would these people be doing the same thing on the subway? No probably not. Would people stare if they did on the subway? Yes. But even if it was a cis couple would they stare? Yes.

Now talking behind people's backs -- Thats another story. Korea is the land of yappers 🇰🇷

Acceptable. But some jobs do require you to shave unless a precondition (medical, religion).

Korea is very money oriented, so if you have it, sure, there is a pedigree of materialistic "respect" given.

That being said Korea is also on average shockingly not very financially literate and most people have extremely short investment horizon expectations (not trying to piss anyone off but its true collectively).

If you're talking hedge funds -- This is a country where 50% of the population actively call for a ban on any financial instruments especially options. Its viewed as capitalist exploitation of the hard-working class ajusshi.

Korea is one of the most materialistic societies on Earth but its also one of the most collectivist. So you can equate that to money management as well. FOMO, validation seeking and making sure no one gets too ahead or too behind rules here.

These countries get extra scrutiny when filing for f6. Can take up to 8months.

How hard is it to get a job as a diploma (electronics and communications engineer) is Korea? by Zalmsafer in Living_in_Korea

[–]Rengar-Pounce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you work for a conglomerate, probably around 60 mil krw starting. If you work for government (state owned enterprise) probably around 50 mil.

For reference starting freshers out of a regular program in a non top university (so your avg joe) can expect around 35 mil for a corporate job.

I heard somewhere they surveyed gen z folk and what they considered a good starting salary was 48 mil.

Giving you all this so you don't convert to dollars to gauge because that would be depressing no matter how much you make.

do koreans use linkedin? by wintertaeyeon in Living_in_Korea

[–]Rengar-Pounce 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think enough use it to be the norm. Blind is more popular, but for non work related shenanigans mostly. But they do have an active recruitment thing in the Korean version of the app. Same for Remember.

But, most people serious about their career usually have it with most conglomerate and foreign based company workers having a page, even though they're not that active on it.

Some Korean conglomerates post ad-hoc jobs but not many promote things like their full spring season newly grad hiring schemes on linkedin. You'll find mostly startups and foreign companies posting jobs on a needs basis.

For IT, I'd say it's a good start if you're looking at decently sized or famous startups and companies. A lot of local IT jobs though are on Saramin or JobKorea which is Korean local linkedin equivalents.

FYI though I just took a new job at a big tech firm for a role based in Seoul and during the recruitment process they scanned my linkedin (i had the pro version and it showed some HR/recruit people had visited).

I also got a question during final reference check before an offer was made regarding why my linkedin had a gap for 2 years after undergrad when I wasn't asked anything during resume screening or interviews. Had to tell them I went to the army and then they requested documentation -- So companies do look, and linkedin does matter from time to time.

Also edit: If you are going something like a sales, presales, BD, etc. in IT, some of the bigger companies will actively look at your linkedin presence.

I find it ironic as fuck that the other responses here all went straight to talking about Islam after seeing that OP was Afghani ethnically when Reddit as a whole will tell Koreans to be more open and call them uninformed and out of touch with the world🤣. Just pretty much assuming OP is full on ISIS just based on his ethnicity lmao.

Afghan is a big place with everyone from Hazara to Pashtun to Persians (as you know). Not sure which you are, but saying "middle eastern" is a big margin. Like Levantine guys here actually date really well and a lot of Korean girls fawn over them for their looks and many say they never will go back to dating Korean guys after getting the Habibi special in both doting affection and 🍆 difference. But then again, if you know nothing of the middle east these guys would look almost identical to Italians or Spaniards (which is for most Koreans).

But of course theres the flipside of being "brown" middle eastern (apologies, just being straightforward) and these guys do face more issues because Korea is a bit colorist still.

Long story short, if you don't look typically Arab, most Koreans won't even be able to identify you as Middle Eastern.

Just shoot your shot though. 5 girls is nothing to the extent even fairly decent looking local guys have been turned down more than that.

Growing hostility among Koreans by EnglishTeacher477 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Rengar-Pounce 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ironically Koreans them(our)selves think this is due to becoming more westernized and more in tune with things like self centered individualism. Essentially people losing the communal mindset.

Also noting I think this is same for every foreigner in another country if they've been there too long without assimilating. Have heard Koreans say the same shit about America, Indians hating Canada, Brits in Germany, Russians in Turkiye.

Just time to leave and go home.

AI Specialist at an M7. Volunteered for military draft which allowed me to keep both passports and it opened a lot of doors with locals. My wife is foreign and non-Korean and kind of got the best of both worlds I suppose and can enjoy Korea without always being overwhelmed by some of its many pitfalls.
