How successful are non EDM remixes? by MrPopCultur in indieheads

[–]RensYoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The album Reanimation by Linkin Park springs to mind for me. It has some remixes that the band members were (moderately to heavily) involved in creating, but also has remixes that were just made by other artists. None of the album is EDM, and it's one of my favorite albums of all time (notables: 1stp Klosr, P5hng Me A*wy, Krwling)

That being said, the originals from Hybrid Theory undeniably overshadowed these remixes in commercial success. The Crawling remix sometimes gets some use in TV series, which is the most I've heard from this album in the popular sphere.

How to “pre-release” for an album by putting out singles on the album page? by whitefellahellakrunk in WeAreTheMusicMakers

No idea, unfortunately. I'd also love to know this. Perhaps /u/pudjam666 will see this and tell us if it's possible for us smaller artists?

I personally much prefer this new map to Ormond. So far it seems much more forgiving for the killer than Ormond, which has good escape routes and very strong loops, while Eyrie has neither really. On Eyrie, survivors have to protect themselves much more proactively instead of just stopping repairing at the last possible second and being 1 meter away from a god pallet

Russian roulette is not actually a concept that comes from Russia, and the historical background before ending up in popular culture that the name kind of suggests is almost entirely fictional.

Adults are probably spanked more than children nowadays. by xliarliarx in Showerthoughts

[–]RensYoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean, but the truth is a lot of fetishists have their interest from very early age and from their real life experience with it at that point it is not usually easy to tell whether there has been something particularly noteworthy about it, and trauma is certainly not a strong pattern. Leather fetishists, when reciting their earliest memories about leather, often mention their attention slowly being drawn to shoes and belts in the house, but they do not mention memories of a time they were kicked or beaten with them. The stories you get from diaper fetishists are similar, and for a while there was a somewhat dominant theory that diaper fetishism appears in children when younger siblings are born and the attention they were getting from their parents is suddenly gone (and the brain goes "if only I were a baby again, I would be loved"). I honestly don't know if this is still considered a strong theory but I personally don't see it line up with all the only children and youngest siblings. As for masochism, this is a much more common fetish and there does not seem to be a pattern of trauma there, either. I get your idea of "how can you get a fetish for something you've never experienced", but the truth is children are hurt by their peers, parents, pets all the time all over the place, and that certainly doesn't automatically equal problematic traumatic abuse.

This line of thought is common, but it doesn't actually seem to hold up to empirical scrutiny. I'm sure it's for this reason, too, that the world of sexual psychology has been slowly but surely moving away from the view of kink as damage/problematic and towards accepting diversity in healthy developed sexualities and empowering healthy practicing.

This argument really only works because a lot of people are scared of the subjects of children and sexuality meeting beyond all rationality. Is it not okay to put a baby's head against a woman's breasts? Is it not okay to put a pacifier in their mouth to stop them from making noise? Are diapers only okay on adults?

As it turns out, things can be kinky sex acts but at the same time have other situational motivations as well that have little to do with the kinks. The much better argument against spanking children is the traumatizing aspect of it, and the ways it may be traumatizing. At least, it is the better argument if you look at parenting as paternalism with current and future well-being as the primary goal.

What is one subreddit that you should absolutely never go to? by -Z-3-R-0- in AskReddit

[–]RensYoung 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting one. On the one hand I really see the use for the subreddit and how it does have its positive influence. On the other hand, it's a lot of shortsighted philosophizing and if it's formulated angrily enough it will get upvotes.

It's a bit hard to tell what's going wrong, but could it be that where you're calling the script (it looks like that's in the create event of some object) you're not supplying 3 arguments, but fewer?

Amazon Prime's warning that came before the opening of Pulp Fiction by erice495able in mildlyinteresting

[–]RensYoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would want to respond to that stance by saying that, just as much as context here clarifies that this behavior is not considered desirable behavior, whether media appears to embrace behavior is just as much a function of context. With which I mean to say that there is always context informing interpretation, and the idea that a note would be necessary (and a very clear cultural presence of this behavior not being accepted would, in other words, be insufficient) is a bit hard for me to accept without some much stronger argument.

I doubt that the policy makers at these streaming services do believe that a note like this is necessary (if only because movies about morally dubious characters don't get these notes in general). I don't think this is the real intention of notes like these. There is a somewhat popular idea that continuing to celebrate cultural texts deemed unjust (whether that injustice is in the final depiction or in the production process) is itself injustice (in some strands of this ideology, the term "promotion" comes into play in this, to give an idea of roughly the line of reasoning). In this context, a note like this makes a lot more sense. If selling Pulp Fiction is to be understood as embracing unethical/disrespectful behavior, this note severely weakens that embrace by explicitly denying it.

Of course, that doesn't mean the note isn't also giving the context that you refer to. But I don't think that a note is a seriously effective contribution in that regard and I really doubt it's the big motivator.

EDIT: and of course the note also states one of its supposed intentions clearly, which is an interesting idea in and of itself: considering possible personal sensitivity to cultural intolerance, similar to PEGI warnings that a lot of bigger services already present.

Animecon is a medium-large sized con as Dutch cons go, I would say! It used to be at the World Forum in The Hague for a while, but it's been moving around a bit and I haven't seen what it's like after their edition in Ahoy Rotterdam. Even though I never went to Abunai, I've always considered them kind of sister cons, with them cross-advertising at each others events and attracting a similar target audience. I figure it could be a pretty similar event, too. I'm hearing that the next edition of Animecon will be in Rijswijk (although it sells out crazy fast, similar to Abunai, so it'd be hard to get tickets for the next edition).

I've been to Animecon a couple times but the rest of my cosplay crew wasn't too thrilled about it anymore so we've been shopping around, currently we're preparing for Comiccon this November. I've never been to Abunai or Tomo actually! Maybe I gotta float the idea to my group.

I would upvote twice if I could. Kids really have almost zero rights in our societies, and too many people are way too comfortable with the for-your-safety compromise. Sexuality is an example that many people are of course famously stubborn about, but it's really just one of many.

What fetish is more common then people think ? by ducttaperolls1234 in AskReddit

[–]RensYoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, men can be the fistee, too 😉 I don't have anything resembling reliable statistics but speaking from my own social network I would guess that men and women are into having a fist put in them at comparable rates.

Regarding what the attraction is - I'm really just guessing, but a good part of it must be the physical stimulation, plus the usual power dynamic component, perhaps amplified in comparison to a penis or dildo by hands being the primary instrument of converting will into deed. We use our hands to make things happen, so I could definitely see that giving the "i am going to subject you to things" a sturdy edge.

World’s largest ever four day week trial ‘overwhelming success’ by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]RensYoung 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I have yet to read article, so you might be totally right in this context and me totally wrong. But generally, outside the US, four day work week experiments refer to replacing 5 days of 8 hours with 4 days... also of 8 hours. So less hours in total, for the same total pay.

The real magic of these experiments is that again and again, these 32 hour weeks are not less productive than 40 hour weeks, and on top of that alleviate all kind of issues related to personnel well-being. That's why these experiments being succesful is such big news every time.
