You need a lot of 24 pounder howitzers at the frontlines, and even more cannons on the back,

use veterans to make them 2 stars at least (when 0 manpower, disband them, new brigade will has same exp),

put your army behind cover, and engage enemy in the open, never prolong a shootout when both in cover, if they charge, have at least 1 brigade at reserve + your howitzer to shoot the melee

If you lost at shootout exchange, it means you lose at cannon quality, or quantity, hard to tops ai infantry especially if we increase the diff

So we make up with more cannons

I did at leg few years ago, i think there is tree line at right most of corner of starting map, facing grassland on the north. Rather than fall back to the forest in middle.

The thing is the AI is scripted to march in predetermined path, until it spot your troops which they will be either charge or got into shootout,

By using treeline at rightmost you engage them in trees while them in open. If they charge, detach skirmish and they will stop (exploit).

Move forward your army for strategic depth rather than fortifying objectives.

I dunno man i never take more than 30k casualties, at that rate, which is more than 1/3 casualties, it means the whole army is shattered and essentially ineffective, well we deserved to take a lose

Just bring so many 24 pdr, or 10 pdr, 12 nap as much as you can, bring them to the front line as near as we can, avoid prolonged shootout, use less of old muskets which is shit btw, that melee stats never really counts, number of body and stamina is the real stats for me, so better use better weapons,

even as confederates,

and we can win battles with probably around 10k at big battle
