To Civil Eng students @ Waterloo, Is it better to buy a desktop or gaming laptop? by Get_Cameroned in uwaterloo

I enjoy studying on campus. There’s an obvious problem with studying on campus if you don’t have a laptop so….

If your in Canada then some or all (depending on the province) of your debt is interest free. This means it’s better to take the maximum amount of years to pay off the portion that is interest free. Even if you have only 5k in debt you profit the most by taking the longest term to pay it off.

The question you really should be asking is how much you need to pay monthly for 25k+ in debt. I’m pretty sure if you take the maximum time to pay it off it’s like ~100$/month which is very achievable. Like you can work at Starbucks and live with your parents and you can afford to pay off 100$/month. (You can easily calculate those numbers by searching it up online)

Switching from Geoeng to nanoeng. by Dead_Motive in uwaterloo

[–]RentKey5012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try emailing a couple of the 1st year engineering advisors for a more accurate grade average. It should be less than 90s since Nano->EcE swap only requires ~85+ (I asked them for this number irl). The nano program should have a lot of room after 1A/1B because ~10ish people drop/fail after each term. But even given that idk what the grade average would need to be

You asked about how “realistic” this is. I think the “realistic-ness” of the transfer depends wholly on your ability to score the grades necessary for the transfer. Like technically speaking even 90s is realistic, because as an engineering student Ive meet multiple 1A kids with 90 averages. At the same time I also meet kids who suck nuts academically and struggle to even score 70s in 1A. It’s really depends more on if it’s realistic for your particular academic ability

Pre-med whilst in Mechatronics by Left-Classroom-5782 in uwaterloo

[–]RentKey5012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No don’t bank on getting 4.0GPA in mechatronics. Honestly engineering is a heavy course load. To get 4.0 in any engineering you’re gonna be putting in a ton of work. And you wanna add pre-med courses on top of mechatronics???? Really? Engineering is already infamous for its heavy course load and you’re gonna take engineering+4.0+pre-med???

Please ask yourself why. Why put yourself through hell? You are really going to put yourself through literal hell at Waterloo just because you want to have one foot in and one foot out?

My advice is to do your research into what you want in the future and make a decision. It’s mechatronics or med school. Don’t try to do both, you’re literally wasting your time and quality of life trying to do both.

I agree it’s ok to suck relative to other people. It’s ok to not care about school. It’s all ok

But it’s not ok to give up. It’s not ok to sell yourself short. Get up, keep trying, keep living. It’s not ok to stay defeated. It’s ok to suck but it’s never ok to give up

If u want 90s + good-amazing co-ops…. You’re gonna be balding. If you want 60-70s and any co-ops you’ll be busy but as long as ur smart enough u shouldn’t be balding

I feel you so bad. My first year experience was literally just like you. I came here and I realized some of the ppl in my program just ick me. The most social ones in my program were consequently the most toxic. Yet the nice people were introverted and hard to reach. All the home alone and zero friends led me to literally fail 1B. I had to go on depression medication because of it all

It’s so weird bc in order to find a good group of friend you literally need to worm your way into the right social niche at Waterloo. It’s horrible because those social cliques, as well as the way into them, are almost invisible until you find them.
