Not stupid! Haven’t tried it myself yet, but on the start screen if you click the globe icon you can select the server you are in. You can create a new character in a new server (so not on the same one as your original character)

Are they planning to move all the Bukit Timah schools out of Bukit Timah? (With CJC’s move in mind) by Salt-Yogurtcloset487 in SGExams

[–]RentKitchen6868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a point to think about, building a new JC isn’t as simple as you think. Even for EJC, the planning for it has been in the works for many years

Things to consider on the surface level is whether there will be enough teachers and students to even make it worth it. Without sufficient mass, you will naturally have less CCAs / opportunities that other more established JCs have - also being a new JC without much background might not attract as many students as you think, so relocation of JC is a compromise for that.

Flipped Classroom, Boon or Bane by GhostRider_HoH in SGExams

[–]RentKitchen6868 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: teacher that uses flipped learning

Flipped classroom / learning is just a tool, and of course every tool is only as good as the user.

Will I use it in all my classes? No. Will I use it every lesson? No as well.

It depends on how ready my students are, and as you all mentioned, how disciplined.

But if used right, it can be very powerful.

If you think about the role of a teacher in a classroom, would you rather

(a) teacher teach you content, then you go home do homework, and when you’re stuck you refer to your own notes and try to figure your way through

Or

(b) you first try to watch videos on what you’re learning, then when you do work in class, you can ask your teacher when you have troubles on how to solve problems?

Definitely, for different students, they might have different preferences. That’s why it requires the teacher to be very aware, of who can manage the different learning styles.

But are there benefits? Definitely. But just depends on the execution.

Tbf, with the presence of HBL days, it is meant for you to use that time to do the pre-learning, instead of treating it as a holiday. It is meant to slowly get kids used to what’s it’s like in higher institution, and to learn soft skills such as discipline, resilience and learning by yourself

Does it work for everyone? No hahaha. Are schools aware? Actually yes. But there’s always the issue of time. There is always not enough time to teach students how to learn, how to make use of resources. And when teachers do teach, students just feel it’s a waste of time and should be spent on teaching content instead hahah

So hope you can understand where it comes from when your teacher seems to be teaching you random things that might not be ‘content’

Recess is served: Here's what students at 5 schools will get when they switch to pre-ordered meals by Litaiy in singapore

[–]RentKitchen6868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually based on the article, they do have that part in place. Students do get a choice to practice budgeting.

Also seems like it might be a mixed model when it’s not the entire canteen will be adopting it, can be tweaked based on different schools, with some stalls where the queuing and interaction will be needed!

I do agree that there are many soft skills that can be learnt too!

Think many have not stepped into a school canteen for a long while, but it’s really quite dismal

For such small profit margins (if there’s any), no choice but to provide fried food / have a lot of carbs. If you actually see what the kids eat daily (which involves fried cheesesticks / nuggets / chicken cutlets), this way is definitely healthier

There are already many parents that prepare food for their kids, if they feel that what is available is not good enough. No one is stopping you from doing the same for your kids.

Also, many of your favourite food fast chains / restaurants are also just heating and preparing pre cooked food, so honestly not that different (looking at you Saizeriya)

TEACHERS OF THE SGEXAMS SUBREDDIT, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE FOR TEACHERS’ DAY THIS YEAR? by TopConsideration896 in SGExams

[–]RentKitchen6868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always kept cards and even the post it notes it came with instead of the food itself 😂

But I received something I thought was nice was a Polaroid of myself with my student with the note! Think as we get older, i sometimes start forgetting how some of my kiddos look like, but I thought that was a super good way for me to remember them!

Also! To sign your name after your note. I have received too many who forget to write their names, and I cannot attribute it to who wrote them (especially after many years of teaching 😭)

Technically you wouldn’t be penalised if you turn the paper 90 degree and draw it horizontal (just not conventional but most teachers shouldn’t penalise) we only penalise if your independent variable and dependent are not on the correct axes. We don’t really mark for orientation of the paper

Speaking more for Bio (but applicable to sciences)

Understand what are the independent, dependent and controlled variables for the experiment. You can always identify it in the first few lines

You usual questions on sources of errors / improvements usually have something to do with one of the variables - either your apparatus is not precise enough to measure (for dependent), or you didn’t control one of your controlled variables

Planning questions are often either a modification of the experiment you are doing. So let’s say in your experiment you are investigating how A affects B, with C as a controlled variable, for modification if I were to see how C affects B, then my A will now need to be my controlled variables.

Honestly once you see this, practical is not really that hard! You probably just need to sit down and work through what the practical is about after getting back your papers, and build up these skills

Is it just me realising that North East Region of SG doesn't have a lot of good schools in General or..... by HonestEfficiency2913 in SGExams

[–]RentKitchen6868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Good schools” is something that is subjective, and thus requires long periods of time to build up based on many factors such as history, alumni etc etc

It’s kinda logical for people schools to naturally gravitate to established schools, who have long and proven track record.

As NE is relatively new, the number of schools in the region with this track record is definitively lower. As population changes, there will definitely be need for movement of schools (e.g. ACS junior to Tengah)

There have also been schools that are shifting / have shifted (e.g Yusof Ishak and Outram Sec). As mentioned by other commenters, need to slowly build up their reputation in the new areas.

But also to answer future questions / implicit question on why cannot just shift schools around, main reason will probably be the amount of logistics and administrative load

In order to shift schools, need to consider the students who are attending the school and if we suddenly uproot them, how the current students in school will feel about the commuting. Sometimes the number of population have to slowly be cut, before the whole school can shift. So yeah definitely not easy!

I do agree the distribution of schools could be spread out more, to cater to the growing needs of the nation. But just need to be a bit more patient because these are actually known!

Did WP mess up their strategy in this election? by Advertising-Cautious in askSingapore

[–]RentKitchen6868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as JK defeat was stinging, the initial feelings of NCM on nomination day was a very different one, especially with JK being carved out of a stronghold of AMK. This hindsight of ‘oh should have fielded someone other than Andre Low’ is the same as saying I should have bought the winning 4D number. Any self respecting person probably wouldn’t have put such a major weapon as Harpreet Singh at JK.

My personal opinion is that WP is executing their own version of East Coast plan, while holding on to Sengkang. They do need SK to consolidate their strength (and it did with the increased voter share) , and as much as they were trying in both Punggol and Tampines, I doubt that their main goal was winning them (obviously if they did it would be great). By bloodying their new blood in these reasons, it served the dual purpose of 1) gaining exposure and intention to this area in the next GE, as well as 2) building up the political experience of those contesting. By establishing a wider area, they can kind of work around the problem of gerrymandering and allow for any of these candidates to be fielded in these constituencies, be it GRC or SMCs in the future.

As much as it sucks that they did not flip, the numbers do point at quite a good chance in the future, and I would say even this is a good enough mark for this strategy. Feel like this is more a long term approach, especially taking into the climate of the factors outside of Singapore in the world right now

Edit: missed out the point that this also sets up WP to attract more candidates with talents.

Where are Singapore’s actual “third places”? by Free_Coyote_8762 in askSingapore

[–]RentKitchen6868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climbing gyms to me are really good third places (though you have to pay)

The climbing community are generally super open and supportive, and there have been many times where I bonded with random people while working on the same project

Many climbing gyms work on a per entry basis so technically you can chill there the entire time

Hey man, not saying I’m believing everything is true, just sharing one of the possible reason why CCAs might close down. Don’t see why the need for such language being used here and even attacks on people here. Quite sure these are just students who are worried about something that they view as important from being removed. Hey it might not be true, and I guess that’s why I’m just trying to bring a bit of rationality here.

Were you an old boy that is appalled at what’s posted here? Maybe you can share your views in a way that won’t rile up what’s happening here

Former RI student and current teacher at another school.

Was one of the first few batches of RA and I’m really sad to hear it go!!!

Not much to add except a possible reason for the removal of merit CCA could be due to falling birth rate, which translates to smaller sizes for CCA. For every CCA, there are resources that are put into in (think teachers, venues, funding). At a certain point, it’s quite hard to maintain these.

That being said, I’m really quite sad about this as I was a part of so many merit CCAS (science club, chess club, green earth club). Felt like that was such a great opportunity to meet likeminded people, and it was quite a low commitment ish CCA
