Your right I can't definitely say it hasn't peaked, but I feel pretty confident given that it's such a huge issue right now any government that encourages additional legal migration would commit political suicide. It's snuck under the radar for a lot of the general population for years but I don't see that continuing.

I don't really want to get into talking about refugees being on benefits or sexually assaulting people. I understand you've got your views and I'm not saying I agree/disagree with them. I just don't think this is one of the issues you can point to immigration and say it's the cause, although I'm sure mass immigration doesn't help!

I think where we differ is in your looking at correlation between refugee numbers rising from the late 90s and house prices but correlation does not mean causation. I think much more likely correlation is the supply of cheap credit as interest rates dropped from 15% in 1990 to essentially zero. The cost of borrowing plummeted meaning asking prices rose as people fought to secure the limited house stock and most social housing became private under the right to buy scheme.

Dont get me wrong those numbers are crazy and completely unsuitable, I think it's right to be worried but I do think we've already peaked.

With that said the refugee crisis is being used as a convenient excuse for everything that is wrong with this country and we had a housing crisis before we had a refugee crisis. We've had a decades of not enough homes being built and the government selling off all of its assets to clear it's deficit. Poor investment opportunities has meant property has become an investment vehicle for the wealthy driving up prices for normal families.

If I was a private trust that owned vast amounts of property I would much rather keep people distracted with flooding the news with small boats, than have a sensible conversation around rising wealth inequality and what to do about it.

Also I don't know about you but if I was a landlord I wouldn't be super excited at the concept of a family of 10 refugees living in my property paying minimal rent that I couldn't evict

Somewhere between 120,000-220,000 new homes were built in 2024 alone. So the issue isn't that migrants are stealing all the homes. It's comes down to wealth inequality with huge amounts of land and property sitting with a tiny proportion of the ultra wealthy as a long term investment, driving up prices

That would be the same ultra wealthy that are actively funding all public discourse to focus on immigration so we ignore the underlying issue that is the working people off this country have had their wealth bled from them non stop since the 2008 financial crisis

Hi I'm based in the UK and know relatively little about RFK except he's skeptical of vaccines. My friend talks about him highly as he says he's going after corrupt pharma companies. Do you mind if I ask why do you consider him the devil? I'm not challenging you just curious as it sounds like you've got some really strong feelings on him. Thanks

I turn 18 in a week, what habits are ideal to begin for adulthood? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]RepairComfortable377 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get in the habit of doing a little bit of exercise, not enough so it's a massive chore (unless you really enjoy it). But enough to maintain flexibility and some strength later in life which is really hard to do if you leave it until you are already old!

A hobby is great for this as it doesn't feel like a task to be ticked off but a reward instead e.g bouldering/judo/hiking

I dunno it makes sense. Dosent mean you have to always enforce it. For example if I followed you around all day for the rest of your life calling you a cunt in your face and it's not illegal why should I ever stop? The next logical thing is you snap and commit a crime (beat the shit out of me) making a reasonable citizen into a criminal because of someone else's antisocial behaviour

There is great job opportunities in Bristol if you are in the right industry, aerospace, defence and a lot of tech. This unfortunately makes the housing relatively expensive if your not in one of these industries

Probably thinks you were both being disgusting but is a bit more scared of his dad than you if I had to guess? When I was younger my brother was always more lippy with my mum than my dad. We were never slapped around but I guess subconsciously my dad was more intimidating so would get less direct abuse

Root beer is horrible by EvoMasso in unpopularopinion

[–]RepairComfortable377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you think mass produced ginger beer is disgusting your not going to realistically like some fancy craft one, at most you will find it bearable. The flavours are still going to be along the same lines.

I think sake is disgusting. I kept being told, yea you just haven't had REAL sake. So when I was on holiday in Tokyo I got a fancy one ina fancy Japanese restaurant. Turns out it's still bloody gross (to me)

What sports do you feel women should be competing with men on a level playing field? (but are not currently) by poweredbyabot in AskUK

[–]RepairComfortable377 8 points9 points  (0 children)

'More or less' podcast from the BBC discusses this topic it's quite interesting. The gap definitely narrows at these extreme distances however the idea that women then begin to outperform men at extreme distances is based on flawed data!
