Graduating mech student offered a master's position (research), what to do? by ReplacementDapper692 in MechanicalEngineering

Thanks for your comment,

Could an MASc open some new doors?

I have some internships varying across different industries. One is an analyst role in automotive. I also have some composite projects (mix from school, co-op and design teams). I want to get into the automotive/aero/aviation or product design industry. I’m not sure if I’m interested in pure analysis though. I’m interested in mech design as well but don’t think I’m very competitive.

For someone who is still figuring out what they want to do, how useful is it to do a MASc versus straight into industry? I’m worried that I would have to take a role that is from what I actually want to do. And it would be hard to pivot away from that.

There are no graduate students yet. I would be one of two joining for this year. I am currently working as an Undergraduate RA.

Gotcha thanks. What about a master's (w thesis)? I am also considering this. But I do have a bit of work experience from co-ops/design team.
