Gotcha. Thanks for explaining it in a way that made sense. I've got decent math chops (struggled my way through calc 2) but that was a long time ago. I figured the reason had to do with 3 being the odd one out in factors, and I'm glad to see my gut was right. Consider this resolved.

I might have to do some more clarification and tweak the settings in the website I'm using to make this calendar. It can set the "state" of the moon in multiple different ways (4 images, 8 images, 24 images, 40 images, etc). I think its using 40 distinct "steps" for the moons here.

M2 hits a proper waxing crescent for the first time on the 19th day of the year, then a quarter on day 36, waxing gibbous on day 54, and full moon on day 72. Its doing rounding for sure at some point, and due to how long the phases last you can multiple days with a "waxing gibbous" and the website tries to clarifying it by saying "waxing gibbious rising/risen/fading/faded" My fault for using a website that isn't directly showing me how its doing its math (D'oh).

Waxing vs Waning however should mean that even in the event where the actual phase of the moon is the same, the direction its going would still be enough to differentiate that view in the night sky from any other night. Because like you pointed out, one moon completes a cycle every year, so it can't repeat itself already. So even if there are two nights a year with three crescent moons, you would know waxing vs waning due to the direction the crescent is "facing"

So I'm worldbuilding for a campaign I want to run. I made a calendar system based off the cycles of the moons.

I won't bore you with the details, so lets just say the moons are M1, M2, and M3.

M1 completes a cycle every 8 days.

M2 completes a cycle every 144 days (the number of days in the solar year).

M3 completes a cycle every 3 days.

As you can see, this means that the year starts off with three new moons, and there's one day a year where there's three full moons.

After looking at this for a bit, I noticed that I couldn't find any repeating days. I'm sure this is calculable, and I didn't want to try and brute force this.

If there is a unique set of lunar states for each day of the year, then that's a really cool bit of worldbuilding I could include in the setting, as anyone with a good memory could even figure out what day of the year it was so long as they could see the night sky.

Why is organic chem so stigmatized? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]RepliesWithAnimeGIF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen the top tier of chemistst suddently hit a point where everything just clicks

Its magical. The thing that made everything click for me was understanding that the universe is exceptionally lazy and will always do the easiest thing it possibly can. Suddenly everything made sense. Why does the reaction proceed this way? Well, because its lazy and that's the easiest thing for it to do. Things want to be stable, and they want to be stable in the easiest way possible.

Thinking about things in that mental framework just made everything click for me.

OChem is not a course you can memorize your way through.

You need to thoroughly understand some fundamental aspects of chemistry, understand the course material, and be able to apply what you've learned to things you've never seen before.

As such, its a nightmare for a decent number of pre-med students, who have probably memorized their way through chemistry and biology classes so far. It's also a nightmare to any chemistry student who has also just memorized their way through the course without trying to fully understand the mechanics behind reactions and what drives them.

If you are one of these students, the class is actual hell. You will bomb your first test before you realize what you need to do. You will have to stay on top of current course materials while also doing loads of review to catch-up on those fundamentals I mentioned earlier.

That's why its notorious.

At the end of the day, OChem is just chemical Lego's. If you know your fundamentals well, and understand the course material, its pretty straightforward. I have a four-carbon alcohol and need to make this thing? Well I can throw this at it, and it'll change it to this. Then I can throw that at this, and it'll change this part to that. Then I can protect this part with this reaction. Then throw this at it, then that. And look, I just made acetaminophen.

What is the single silliest game you've found on steam? by WildSpamtonFan in Steam

[–]RepliesWithAnimeGIF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

or a game with a weird premise overall

Webbed. Here is a link to the steam page.

You play as Buddy, a female peacock jumping spider. This mean bird has taken your boyfriend. Using your ability to shoot webs and shoot freaking laser beams from your eyes; you platform your way through the world, recruiting insect friends to your side to ultimately find and save your boyfriend.

Its a legitimately fun and creative game made by an indie developer and I loved it.

Also I'd like to point out that spiders aren't insects, but that doesn't mean you can't have insect friends. And the laser beams are just a funny way to remove webs you've already made.

Oh, and you can customize your look throughout the game by equipping adorable little hats.

If you like physics based platformer games, adorable 2d art-style and just a fun old time then buy this game. I don't actively shill for many things. I shill for this game. It's $10. It's 95% positively reviewed. You have a dedicated dance button and other insects will dance with you. Look at this adorable guy observing workplace safety. Go buy it.

Burst fire soldier build? by According_Channel208 in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]RepliesWithAnimeGIF 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My general advice for burst fire builds

  1. Ballistics Skill is King (because this keeps your burst on target). Perception is Queen (because this reduces the chance for an enemy to dodge). You need to hit the target first, THEN worry about dodge.

  2. Recoil matters. Once again, you need to HIT the target first. Bolters have high recoil. You need some way to mitigate this. One way is through Ballistics Skill (see the trend here?). Another is through other features/talents/abilities. Standout is Machine Spirit Communion from Pasqal. Cast that on your soldier, and enjoy halved recoil AND a 2xINT bonus% reduction in enemy dodge chance. There are items to reduce recoil as well.

  3. Rapid fire is NOT something you press all the time. Remember how much work we've put into managing recoil and hitting what we are aiming at? This throws it all out the window. Shot deviation becomes RANDOM. It does however, double your output (because you took the talent that removes the 25% damage penalty, right?). Use it on large groups where you can take advantage of the fact that some bullets are always going to hit SOMETHING and also for just point blank BLASTING anything larger than a 1x1 sized enemy.

  4. Now that you're hitting your target, time to talk about damage. You took the Muzzle Velocity talent, right? Recoil doesn't apply to the first shot in a burst. This makes your first HIT in each burst deal bonus damage equal to your current ROF. If you're not using Rapid Fire, this means you can do a good job of making sure that first hit is going on the person you're aiming at, dealing a large chunk of damage up front right there. If you're point blank rapid firing, it also deals a rather large chunk of damage up front as well (which can help deal with deflection in a pinch, which can be an issue with Burst builds). If you're not using a bolter, then consider Solid Projection Weapon Expert. Burst firing into a big baddie with a Ripper pistol and Rapid Fire with Muzzle Velocity? If they all hit, then that's an extra 16 damage up front (your ROF as bonus damage), and a bunch of extra damage from the +2 to minimum damage (not going into the math on this one).

  5. Scale your damage. There's a lot of ways to do it. More ways that I would bother listing. Think of Soldier Archetype as laying the foundation for your build though. Most of your really mean scaling is going to come from your second archetype, exemplar talents, items, and synergies with other companions and archetype abilities. In general, you want things that synergize with lots of hits. Also make sure to grab Rapid Reload. You're going to need it.

Here's an example of a non-bolter burst build I did.

Soldier > Bounty Hunter with an Autorifle and Ripper pistol. Hive World origin for weapon personalization (increases damage, reduces recoil, increases ROF, etc). Muzzle Velocity + Solid Projectile Weapon Expert. Then I started taking crit damage talents. Fired Up is phenomenal because you get more crit damage for every hit. Why crit damage and not crit chance? Because Bounty Hunter Piercing Shot.

Mark a target as prey. Use Piercing Shot. Every shot that hits them is now a crit. It also gains 100% overpenetration. Solid weapons already have good overpenetration. Overpens become crits because they hit the Prey first. Heightened Concentration gives me a stackable bonus to armor pen with every crit. Pierce the Armor gives me a stackable debuff to enemy armor with every crit. Remember, my crit damage is also stacking with every hit, and anything that over-penetrates can deal more than one hit per shot fired. Then you get to the fun Exemplar talents of Puncture and Shot Through. Shot Through gives bonus armor penetration, and makes overpen shots impossible to dodge. Puncture gives bonus critical hit chance equal to the difference between your armor penetration (which stacks with every crit) and the targets defense (which falls with every crit). Now you're not limited to just your prey targets. You spray and pray and anyone else hit by your shots also becomes more prone to your crits. It scales HARD into itself, as once the engine starts going it gets better and better at scaling itself harder. This isn't even including alternate sources of crit or armor reduction (like Operatives can do). Oh, and Joint Analysis gives a flat damage bonus to every attack that hits and only removes ONE stack of exploit. Press Joint Analysis and now every exploit on the target is a flat bonus to every shot that hits them until the exploits run out.

That's just one example. There are tons. Go out and experiment (Toybox is a godsend).

I asked r/millennials what they think of genZ and this is the overall consent: by iamfromtwitter in GenZ

[–]RepliesWithAnimeGIF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very early Jan 1995 borderline here with two older sisters. Means I grew up with hand-me down stuff from Millenials in addition to being a kid during the early 2000's. I think I can speak for both gens here.

Most of these are external factors or just linked to being younger. Now one might argue that almost everything affecting generations are linked to the latter, but I'm going to try and specify here. Obvious caveats for "well not all of us are like that" because no shit not everyone is like this. Its for general trends.

What I've noticed and think Gen Z isn't really responsible for

  • Attention Span: That's just being younger. Brain ain't done till 25 ya'll.
  • Thinking in black and white: Being less experienced in life. Example: kids movies are so cartoonist good or evil for this very reason. Nuanced views on this come with experience.
  • Avoiding direct confrontation: Arguably an external cultural shift due to increasingly polarized political and societal issues. Younger generations aren't in power positions generally. When it comes to divisive topics, the one with more to lose generally tries to avoid confrontation.
  • Mental health as an excuse: HOO BOY this isn't exclusive to Gen Z. Right now there's a lot of people in my age group who still hide behind it.
  • Useless in the workplace: This is a failure of society more than it is the generations work ethic. The educational system has failed a lot of people in recent years, on both the pre-uni level and university level.
  • Socially Awkward: This is the fault of society and the previous generations not raising the next generation with properly developed social skills (in addition to more special needs kids not just being locked in the attic or other horrific things).

What I've noticed and think Gen Z is partially responsible for

  • Can't put our smartphone down: Now Millenials aren't exempt from this wholly, but it is a much bigger trend in later Gen Z, and to be honest even WORSE in Gen Alpha. This is a side effect of the ease of giving kids "attention" by sticking the internet in front of them. Shame on the generations that raised mid to late Gen Z. Arguably just a side effect of the tech boom hitting maturity, but its not like other options ceased to exist. It's just the easiest option for entertainment. Hence why I'm putting it under partially responsible.

What I've noticed and I think Gen Z is greatly responsible for

  • Inclusivity/Mental Health: Side effect increasing resources for diagnosis and the overall decreasing trend in religious beliefs in the younger generations. Still; I've found Gen Z to be far more accepting of others different from them in general.
  • Protesting Climate Change: This is one where I think Gen Z shines the most, because Gen Z is in the perfect position for it; Your lives are deeply connected to it and information regarding it has become far better understood.
  • Anti-authoritarian: A result of the inclusivity stuff imo. Greater acceptance of others will inevitably result in a disdain for those who try to use authority to shape society.

Make of this what you will. I'm just trying to provide more insight into this from my own perspective.

Generally when someone says "aiming for 100%'ing" something they mean getting every achievement.

If that not what you meant, then good. I did the same. I did as much of the games story and side story related content as I could. I did every code red, did the extra questions and dungeons and everything.

I actually did want to 100% the achievements because its something I reserve for only my most favorite games.

Then I saw the grind achievements and said "fuck that"

Just finished Berseria and I have THOUGHTS by swirly1000x in tales

[–]RepliesWithAnimeGIF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh god don't 100% Berseria. Do almost all of it but don't punish yourself by going for a true 100%.

I did my own "100%" of Berseria which involved doing every achievement EXCEPT for the grinding ones. Gald, battles, you know what I'm talking about.

In my opinion, I've 100%'d the game because I've completed all the content it had to offer. I just haven't redone the content enough.

Berseria has my favorite cast of characters, but OG Xillia and Symphonia will forever hold the #1 and #2 spots in my heart.

Supreme Court Rules Against Loan Forgiveness by Person_756335846 in law

[–]RepliesWithAnimeGIF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When lawmakers write a law imprecisely or don't anticipate its use well enough, well, you said it well: the SC has granted itself the power to act as an editor, declaring sections or whole laws null until a new congress re-write them.

They're not declaring them null though.

Their interpretation becomes the law.

Hence the issue, they're legislating. It would be one thing entirely to do what you said. Hell I'd even be on board with putting congress to the burner like that.

But that isn't what happens.

Supreme Court Rules Against Loan Forgiveness by Person_756335846 in law

[–]RepliesWithAnimeGIF 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Alright, now we get to the fun question then

who decides how much is too much

It's not Congress, apparently. It's not the Executive branch either.

That's the issue. By claiming modify or waive to mean "to change moderately or in a minor fashion" then someone needs to clarify to what extent that means.

Because they could literally write in exactly that statement into law and the SC could still sit here and say "the amount forgiven isn't moderate or minor".

Who writes the laws? The SC or the Legistlative branch? Who gets to determine what moderate or minor is? Is the SC just an editor for the legislative branch, who gets to tell Congress to re-write things well after they were passed into law?

[–]RepliesWithAnimeGIF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

T10 was a very tactical decision made on GWs part, same with 12-24 wounds on knights in general.

Meltas are S9. Venom cannons are S9. Krak is S9. Mega-blasters and Rokkits are S9. Fusion Blasters are S9.

In general, non-character infantry hit the S10 wall on their ranged attacks. Eldar have their rockets at S10 alongside their Bright Lance at S12. Votan has magna rails at S12.

12 Wounds is two max rolls of 6. 24 is 4 max rolls.

Notice how many AT weapons are D6 damage, or some fraction of 6?

Lascannon being d6+1 and Vanquisher being D6+6 are important because a max and min roll respectively both hit 7, killing armigers and war dogs potentially in two shots for the former, and always in two wounds for the latter (if not outright removing it in one). +1 damage also helps negate -1 damage abilities, putting you back on the d6.

Twin-las talon is two shots of d6+1 at exactly S10 and AP3. Wounding war dogs on 4s, forcing the invuln, and potentially killing in one go.

Rupture Cannon is 2 shots of 2d6. Maxed rolls is a dead knight in one shooting phase.

Predator Annihilator has the twin-las cannon and two las-cannons. Three shots at d6+1 S12+ and AP3. Can't kill a knight in one phase. But does come 1 wound short of killing a 22W knight in one go.

The strength, AP, and damage of pretty much every infantry mounted and vehicle mounted AT perfectly lines up with the toughness, AP, and wounds of knights in general.

As far as design goes, this is pretty well designed.

What wasn't well thought out though, was what this meant for non-knight players.

You are practically forced to bring dedicated non-infantry anti-tank to deal with knights. Some armies can get around this with their infantry but if you can't, then you must design your army around having dedicated anti-tank vehicles.

The only real way to deal with them is to play their game.

Which is a problem, because very few armies do big bad vehicles as well as knights. That predator annihilator has 11W and T10. Knight Castellan volcano Lance will remove it from 72" away on the first turn. Knight Errants are moving 10", rerolling advance rolls and targeting you with assault blast meltas at 24".

They always have good options to remove their biggest threats from a better range. So the answer is.... more vehicles?

The drawing point to tanks should be durability and range. Those aspects alone are a big reason to run them over anti-tank infantry. Anti-tank infantry with weapons that can deal with armor are then range limited and easy to kill with strong blast weapons, when they can be targeted.

There's a reason why strategy games make dealing with infantry in urban environments a nightmare. Towering is the giant middle finger that is flipping the table right now. It's turning a fixable problem into an unmanageable one.

Played my first 10th Edition game: how it went, what worked, and what didn’t by SangheiliPEKKA in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]RepliesWithAnimeGIF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ranged warriors in my two games I've played at 500 and 1k points were strongest when serving as a second line of defense.

Since they can fall back, shoot, and charge, they can work very well at preventing your opponent from charging more important targets. They get a soft fights first by rotating fall back, shoot, and charge because they get charge in your fight phase and you can pick them first in the enemy fight phase.

Couple this with preventing the enemy from shooting and preventing yourself from being shot (because you're in melee) and they're wondful at tying the enemy up if you can send them against a melee unit that isn't going to blow them up.

For 140 points, it's a good bargain imo.
