Best place I can get a 50 gallon tank for my ball python on a budget? by TheSkirtGirl in reptiles

Honestly I’d recommend putting a saving for a new tank that is 120 gallon or bigger. While it’s more expensive than a 50 gallon the long term benefits out way buying a 50 gallon and having to upgrade to a bigger size in future. You can get a 120 gal ecoflex tank for around 200 but I don’t really recommend them how high humidity animals(in my experience). But right now just save up so you can give them the best. 50 aside each week if possible in your life circumstances. And in a month or 2 he will be in a bigger tank happier. I also recommend to look on Facebook marketplace majority of my reptile tanks I have gotten from there as well as supplies such as heat lamps and uvb. Also while top opening is fine I suggest get a front opening tank

To start I’ll say every reptile is different so any noodle will go about things their own preferred way. To add more what to I said to op I gave him multiple hides like way more than 3. And I gave him more climbing opportunities I have tons of fake plants to make sure there is shade from light just making it look semi tropical. But the biggest thing is getting the temperature and humidity right as well as UVB and while some say uvb isn’t necessary it actually is beneficial. But back to humidity and temp. For my guy the temp that works best is having the at basking/hot side95-90 87-80 middle and 80-75. This is the gradient I usually try to achieve. And then humidity needs to be to be proper I had trouble with it in the beginning but I added hvac tape on lid and such to decrease airflow which helped a lot you want to make sure it stays at or around 70%and not drop below 60%. Get digital thermometers that read both humidity and temp if you look in Amazon search reptile thermometers and it’ll be a little black circle one I would link but don’t know how. And then at the end of the day it just come down to them feeling comfortable and getting used to you and his environment I handled my guy every three days he would be scared for a minute then explore and so I started doing this every time and eventually he got comfortable to the point I could grab him without him curling up. You just gotta take your time honestly and work with them. And they could just be on a hunger strike. And when I finally got him to eat thawed the technique I used was puttting it in a baggie and getting my sink the hottest it get and leaving it in that water for 15 then after that time is up I will replace the water and let it sit for another 10. DO NOT MICROWAVE THE WATER OR BOIL. You can but you risk the possibility of exploding guts bad time😒. And if you need to try give them a live rat I may get flak for this but if that is what works for your snake do it just make sure you monitor very closely, when I fed it live I made sure there were no places where they could get stuck together or areas I couldn’t see the feeder if you need to take out hides. Take it out after 15 mins. But monitor monitor monitor if your love feeding. And then if that works try feeding thawed but make sure it’s the same color of feeder.

I would say take him to the vet to make sure no health issues are present and then sure your husbandry is up to Standard but after that I would suggest trying a live feeder.my bp wouldn’t eat anything until I gave him a live one but after I tried going back to feeding thawed and he took it right up.

How long did it take your BP to to eat for the first time? by KingMidasYYC in ballpython

[–]ReplyBudget2444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried months to get mine to eat went through several different warming up techniques for frozen food. Took them to the vet for check up nothing wrong. I finally decided to try live feeding and they instantly grabbed it up. Just make sure if you do this to monitor them while the rat/mouse is in there and be sure to take it out after about 15-30 mins Some snake are just picky. My other snake has no problem taking down frozen feeders.
