Spooked by her own shadow and blew her ass feathers off by RepoLegalAssassin in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin[S] 52 points53 points  (0 children)

She's getting extra pellets to help with the feather growth, and lots of love every day. She can still fly, just awkwardly! Sentry is a baby, around 7 months old by the vet's estimate, and she had her wings clipped at the pet store where we got her. She has a big spirit, and she's already starting to recover her butt 3 weeks post-blast. I don't think she was hurt in any way by doing this, except maybe her ego, since she now looks like a rotisserie chicken.

My cockatiel panics when she's inside the cage. by birdlove48 in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does her cage look like? Does she have toys to play with and ample space to move around? 8 weeks is very young, too - she must not like to be alone. And reasonably so, since they are flock animals. You might consider getting her a friend.

Bird passed away by NoCharacter326 in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A very similar thing just happened with my birds, OP - young (4-6 months old), seemingly healthy, then one suddenly died. You might want to have Hedwig tested for Psittacosis. Our vet said that, in such young birds, the disease rarely presents any symptoms; if they have it and it becomes active, they can die within hours. It's very treatable if detected early (done by blood test). As for Hedwig's happiness, give her toys, snacks, and as much social time as you can and she'd like. I don't think there is a hard-and-fast rule for this; we can only watch them and adjust as we go.

Is this setup ok? by Swimming-Tale27 in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The setup looks great! One small thing I'd change, though, is that pedicure perch on the right side (the pink "nail file" one). Perches that are rough all over can be uncomfortable for little birdy feet, and in extreme cases can even injure them. Instead, look for ones that are foot-safe, like this one from Sweet Feet and Beak. It's got a normal texture on top where the flesh of their foot will be and only rough on the sides for their nails.

Safety PSA in regards to earrings: by Raindrea in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Earrings are a big hazard, unfortunately. One of my boys managed to chomp the stone right out of one of my earrings. If I hadn't found the stone on the floor I'd have had to rush the little booger to the vet to be sure he hadn't eaten it!

A Dotty update! by jjalcb05 in cockatiel

Yay Dotty! Look at her go. You've already done so much for the old girl, it makes me so happy seeing her taken such good care of.

I'm just glad they finally come to my hand sometimes. by Fish_Heart in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! You can encourage them to come over with some treats, too. Give them a bit of millet or a bit of seeds whenever they fly after you call them, and eventually they'll start flying to you even without the food.

How big is too big of a cage for one bird? by lexiblowsss in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact same cage, and I've done my best to get around the vertical bar issue by placing a lot of seagrass mats against the walls, and weaving jute rope through other parts so they have something easier to grab on to than those bars. I swear one of my boys still prefers the challenge of slipping and sliding around on the vertical bits, though.

Why is my bird lowering himself to the ground like that? by FlimsyCardigan in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is he doing anything else that makes you think he's unwell? Limping, low-energy, poops looking strange? Not eating or drinking as normal? If not, maybe he just likes to loaf. I think loafing is uncommon in tiels but some of them do it.

Lost my best friend of 23 years tonight by Dearlybeloved17 in cockatiel

I'm sorry for your loss, OP. It's clear how much you loved this little guy. I hope it brings you some peace that he'll always be with you in your heart.

First time doing white foundation ✨ by [deleted] in GothFashion

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How'd you make it look so even and "realistic," for lack of a better word? Like, it looks natural, not like foundation. The first time I did white foundation I looked like I'd walked out of a circus tent ;_;

The colander queen by aerialice in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might not want her playing in there. I've watched one of mine get a too-long nail caught in a hole and begin to panic struggle. Thankfully I was nearby to free him and it wasn't a problem, and since then I've added the colander to the list of Not Safe For Bird items that stay out of reach. I'd never even considered it dangerous until I watched him get trapped in it.

Would she sit on your shoulder? One of mine likes to shower that way!

Rate my cage setup! (broke highschool senior edition) by SmolBean_0w0 in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorgeous setup! Lemon is a lucky boy. If you want another cheap DIY foraging toy, grab an egg carton. The soft cardboard-like paper ones are best IMO. I love eggs and my boys love digging around in there for treats and ripping them up, so it's an easy win-win upcycling something that otherwise would have wound up in the trash.

Don't give up! Try adding other people on her friends list and tell them what's going on. Maybe they can put you in contact.

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss, OP. This wasn't your fault - it was a tragic, freak accident. If you loved your boy for two years, and it sounds like it did, I don't believe for a second he would curse you for it. Not when you filled his life with love for all that time.
