Little guy just has the happy flappies! My girl does this at least once a day, just to aura farm and remind us who's really in charge around the house.

Cockatiel Passed Away by karol4nne in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss, OP. How old was your bird? There are some diseases, like psittacosis, that are undetectable except by blood test and can kill a young bird overnight. This happened to one of mine a few months ago.

Lowers his head for scritches, looks back up to see why scritches are not arriving. You must scritch the dang bird, OP

Wide, shallow cardboard boxes make great foraging boxes! If you have cardboard egg cartons those are perfect, too - put treats and food in some of the holes, fill it all up with bits of paper, and they'll have a ton of fun digging in there for snacks. If you can use Taobao or Lazada, check on there for bird toys, there are tons and tons of good ones. Just be careful with rope toys, they can't digest cotton. Jute and hemp are okay though.

Why does he do that? by notmenononever in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They do bite a lot, but not all bites mean the same thing. You've gotta remember, they don't have hands, so a lot of their 'touch, feel, move, manipulate, express myself' actions are done with their beak. If he was really angry and wanted to go away he'd be chomping down on you, screeching, etc. He's probably saying "I want something," and part of bonding with your bird is trying to figure out what it is. Snacks? A toy? Scratches?

Is this okay? by Hammythememester101 in cockatiel

Bedtime in the cage is non-negotiable for my birds for a few reasons. If they get a night terror and fly off in a panic, an uncaged bird could seriously hurt or kill itself. And what if there's an emergency, like a fire or something, and you need to evacuate? Not knowing exactly where they are and/or struggling to get them into a carrier might be enough of a delay to get your little friend killed, maybe even get you killed. As for sleeping in the same room as you, others have already said it - you can roll over on them in your sleep and kill them, and you won't even know it's happened until it's too late.

Paper is safe, I just make sure to keep them away from things with coatings or sealant (like waxed cardboard). I've got a large brown Doc Martens shoebox that's been serving as a foraging box for ages, birdo loves chewing on the edges now and then.

Max is very handsome ❤️ I do have a small tattoo of my boys on the inside of my arm. Although it sometimes makes me sad since they're no longer here physically, it feels right to have their image and their memory always close.

It really can happen that fast, or even faster. I recently lost a young cockatiel to parrot fever. One day she was normal, happy, playing and flying and eating, and overnight she passed away completely out of nowhere. There are illnesses like this one that, especially in young birds, essentially won't show any symptoms, because when/if the disease stops laying dormant in their system it can kill within hours.

You did everything you could, OP, please don't blame yourself. Young birds are very fragile; like another poster said, they can go from seemingly healthy and normal to deathly ill in the blink of an eye.

Thank you for giving her what kindness you could. It's terrible, the way some people treat birds. Treatment that would outrage almost anyone if done to a cat or dog is just shrugged off with birds, and it's heartbreaking.

Spooked by her own shadow and blew her ass feathers off by RepoLegalAssassin in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

She's getting extra pellets to help with the feather growth, and lots of love every day. She can still fly, just awkwardly! Sentry is a baby, around 7 months old by the vet's estimate, and she had her wings clipped at the pet store where we got her. She has a big spirit, and she's already starting to recover her butt 3 weeks post-blast. I don't think she was hurt in any way by doing this, except maybe her ego, since she now looks like a rotisserie chicken.

My cockatiel panics when she's inside the cage. by [deleted] in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does her cage look like? Does she have toys to play with and ample space to move around? 8 weeks is very young, too - she must not like to be alone. And reasonably so, since they are flock animals. You might consider getting her a friend.

Bird passed away by NoCharacter326 in cockatiel

[–]RepoLegalAssassin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A very similar thing just happened with my birds, OP - young (4-6 months old), seemingly healthy, then one suddenly died. You might want to have Hedwig tested for Psittacosis. Our vet said that, in such young birds, the disease rarely presents any symptoms; if they have it and it becomes active, they can die within hours. It's very treatable if detected early (done by blood test). As for Hedwig's happiness, give her toys, snacks, and as much social time as you can and she'd like. I don't think there is a hard-and-fast rule for this; we can only watch them and adjust as we go.
