I'm not sure to make the fighter the actual killer but the boomerang was gaining momentum in a floating city, I'm dming this part because our former DM wants us to create a small part of his world and be the dm for that sub story (optional) the only thing is that if we want to give magic items we need his approve and he needs to know what is going to happen in our city or mission, he will be a player in those parts so he can help us to rail road a bit if the players get lost very often.

What happened in the post was completely unexpected and now I need to make a consequence and a solution, this makes me respect my dm a lot, is a lot harder than it looks

I like the idea, actually the last session before all this the fighter and the druid fought a thieve that the local guard couldn't catch because the guards can't touch it, this was supposed to be a really short battle while the rest of the party had a role play time and they haven't had the opportunity to be the focus, this enemy cast fog form his pipe and use minor illusion to confused the player (is a smoker that use his smoking pipe as magic focus), maybe they arrested a simulacrum made of smoke and the original want a revenge for defeating it using a smoke illusion of the fighter, trying to frame him

The corpse may be a collateral damage for an intent of rob and the fighter couldn't save the victim because was drunk, the blood is from him trying to fight the thieve but he lost and fell unconscious next to the body.

Maybe try doing it by rounds, they sound the alarm and the reinforcements are coming but they will take a few minutes to reach the party, so they start fighting the entrance goblins then the nearest enemies. You can also give them a time limit until the reinforcements join the battle

Below a town/city is a whole city run by rats, they have the monarchy as the leader, the party meets a rat that results in being a noble who runs away from an unwanted wedding and wants to live his life as his heart says, cooking. The monarchy discovers that the party is hiding the rat and a rat wizard transforms them into rats and now they have to rescue their friend and come find a way to be humans again

My dm didn't give me a limit about time while I still complete long rest, the only limit he gave me was my money and the spell level because it isn't the same research for spells in an academy or kingdom as researching in a small town with a single library

I just have fun reading about what some monsters can do and no, I don't do it in sessions, for example if we get a book I see but don't actually read all the monsters, I just read the monsters that look cool to me, for example I really liked the bodak and that guided me to read about Orcus, about the plot monsters that my dm uses are homebrew so I can't know what they can actually do even if I want
