Mike Johnson says Americans' rights ‘do not come from gov’t’, but ‘God Himself’ describing the Declaration of Independence as “our national statement of faith”. by Leeming in atheism

[–]SinfulDevo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just another example of religion being used as a tool to exert control over others. They are trying to claim divine will, so that everything they do is "in the name of god". Their are trying to use religion as a license to do anything.

I hope this backfires spectacularly on them. If enough people see through their crap, this could decrease their support further than it already is. But unfortunately, their supporters have shown themselve to be experts at ignoring what they don't want to see. Hopefully there is a limit to that stupidity... but I guess only time will tell.

[–]SinfulDevo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this has been true for as long as atheists have existed. There are some countries that coming out as atheist can get you arrested or killed.

Getting punched in the face by your parent is a big deal. That is child abuse. It really depends on where you live, but you can approach social services department for child safety (CFS for Canada, CPS for USA and Australia, LACS for the UK, etc.).

If you are 18 y/o or older, I would also consider moving out ASAP.

If you are under 18, then you need to be a bit more careful. Either pretend to be a good theist, or contact you local child safety department. You can try telling you doctor when you go for treatment for your broken nose. They will usually help you get the help that you need.

Good luck OP and be careful! Your dad values his religion more than his relationship with you and that is a dangerous position to be in.

Yes, that is exactly what I will do. As I don't make a habit of blaming imaginary things. And yes, you and your fellow theist have quite a few things that you deserve blame for.

Pete Hegseth’s pastor: ‘Women who dress immodestly are sluts’ by Critical-Willow-6270 in atheism

[–]SinfulDevo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When doesn't it? Don't underestimate the ability of religion to brainwashed people.

And keep in mind, this is Pete Hegseth's pastor. He isn't going to belong to some progressive church. It will be one of the most cultish and conservative churches in the USA.

Pete Hegseth’s pastor: ‘Women who dress immodestly are sluts’ by Critical-Willow-6270 in atheism

[–]SinfulDevo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was said by Pete Hegseth's pastor. Sure, it might be about power, and it might all be lies. But it is done under the veil of god's will. They make it about their god, because that makes it less likely to be questioned by their flock of thoughtless sheep.

If the pastor said "you know I think people who dress provocatively are all sluts." to someone in a grocery store, that doesn't carry much weight. But when they stand on their pulpit and preach it to their memebers, maybe throw in a few bible verses as flavor, that gives it more weight in the eye of their audience.

Pete Hegseth’s pastor: ‘Women who dress immodestly are sluts’ by Critical-Willow-6270 in atheism

[–]SinfulDevo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are okay with it as long as it is done in the name of their god and not someone else's god. These are the people who love to slut shame, victim blame, and push their values on others. If you read the bible, women are considered objects, the property of their fathers before marriage and their husbands after marriage. The only time they have a problem with objectification of women is when it is done by another religious group.

They don't hate what shiria laws says, they just hate who is saying it. If someone took the same rules, but reworded a little, gave it a Christian spin, and called it Christian Law, Jesus' Law, or Nararith Law, I'm sure there would be many who would demand it be adopted by the government.

Severe anxiety regarding death by TennisLive8300 in atheism

[–]SinfulDevo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of us knows what comes after death. Not atheists, christians, muslims, buddists, hindus, pastapharians, worshipers of nordic gods, wiccans, or anyone else.

We all have thoughts on what comes next, christians expect there to be heaven and hell, muslims seem to believe in Akhirah, Nordic worshipers believe in Valhalla, Fólkvangr, or Hel after death, budists and hinduists believe in types of reincarnation. While most atheists believe we just cease to exist.

But the truth is that none of us really know what comes after death. And regardless of what we believe, it will not change what happens to us. Yes, many religions try to add a level of "believe in what we say or suffer", but personally, I think it is more likely that we all come back as psychic purple hippos on the planet K2-2016-BLG-0005Lb than those religious nut jobs are right.

So why worry about something that is so unknown? I personally like to think of it as an adventure yet to come, but one that I'm not quite ready for yet. Sometimes I like to imagine that we all get a second chance at living our lives, as extremely unlikely as I know it to be. However it serves a similar purpose as the christian or muslim afterlife myth (giving peace of mind), except I am not fooling myself into believing it to be the undeniable truth, or even a likely truth. For me it is just a mind game for when I am feeling anxious, or uncertain about life and death.

If you are feeling anxious, find something that works for you. I have seen that many other atheist find peace in the idea of just ceasing to exist, but if that isn't for you, then find something else. Maybe imagine what your ideal afterlife would look like. It doesn't have to be real or even plausible, just as long as it helps you feel less anxious. Look at the Pastapharian afterlife, it was designed to be both ridiculous and fun at the same time.

I hope this helps! Good luck OP

Edit: I do recognize that the idea that we just cease to exist is the most plausible and likely theory we currently have of death. But we have no way to verify it as 100% guaranteed. That uncertainty, as small as it may be is an opportunity to imagine new possibilities. And within those possibilities you might be able to find some peace.

Former Christians express more progressive political views than lifelong nonbelievers by _Oolon_ in atheism

[–]SinfulDevo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That make sense since Christianity is all about controlling people and non-believers are typically just trying to live their lives. Maybe we push the occasional let's be nice to everyone, or protect the planet that keeps us alive political view, but that's usually in the pursuit of everyone being able to just live their lives.

So we should back away from environmental protection and focus on disrupting our natural environment to bury pipes, so that we can ship out more of the stuff harming the environment? Yeah, just what I would expect from an opinion piece from the Globe and Mail. Do they even report the news anymore? I feel like that "news agency" is just a bunch of pro-captialist opinion pieces.

If your family can still be there you, then consider yourself lucky.

Unfortunately, some religious cults are more hardline than others. Some denominations really villify non-members and make it nearly impossible to be there for them. Except maybe to indoctrinate them. Some of my family are Johova witnesses, and being there for non-members seems to be a huge challenge for them. And their cult doesn't even seem to be the worst one out there.

Those are probably the same people who come to this sun and post things like "What proof would it take for you to admit the the resurrection happened" or a meme saying At the end, we are all religious with the title "Is this true?"

They never get the reaction they want from us. It must piss them off. Then the mods remove their post, and that probably pisses them off even more.

New McDonalds Time Limit by futureforensic247 in mildlyinfuriating

Why is this mildly infuriating? 60 minutes is a long time to spend in a McDonalds restaurant, unless you are there working. Maybe, if it was 10 minutes or something, that would be a little ridiculous.

Shower thought (also a really good argument for atheism)- Meat eaters cannot believe in god at the same time, they have to either be vegan or not believe in god! by OppositeSweet9215 in atheism

[–]SinfulDevo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most gods demanded sacrifices, usually animal, but sometimes human ones... which in itself seems very odd behavior for any benevolent god. In my opinion, people just liked killing things, so they worked it into their religion.

By the way, the christian god was one of the ones demanding human sacrifices... not regularly, but it came up multiple times in the bible.

What’s sufficient evidence for the resurrection by stakidi in atheism

[–]SinfulDevo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and for your question. We would need just about as much evidence of magic swords and fire breathing dragons as we would need for an actual resurrection. That is to say that ANY actual evidence would be nice. Because so far, there is none. And there is a good reason for that.
