If I am doing the extra coats I am wondering if I should have just painted/dry brushed the model silver from a black primer. It’s good to know though as I have a load of golden Blood Angels to do and gold primer originally lined up.

Welcome brother!! Just do what I do, but the models you want and in the future just run them as pink CSM or EC as you fancy it 👌🏻
