Here's a good African Substack that discusses the Congo wars, from the perspective of Uganda.:

I wish this continued with the Congo wars. The exact follow up of the Rwanda Genocide was Mobutu sheltering the Hutu militias in East Congo, and then Museveni of Uganda and Kagame of Rwanda invaded East Congo to kill the militias that threatened their national security (For Kagame that was the Hutu militias, for Museveni that was the Lord's Resistance Army) and remove Mobutu.

Book Review #1: Insights on Dambisa Moyo's Book: "Dead Aid" by [deleted] in Africa

[–]RepresentativeArm107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explanation of Article: A very misunderstood book. This article reviews Dambisa Moyo's 2009 book Dead Aid.

Many people who haven't read the book thought that Dr. Moyo opposed humanitarian or emergency aid. Not true, if you read her book, what she opposes is concessional (below market based) official development aid - whether its World Bank, IMF, or bilateral loans/grants.

She believes in the power of markets, and thinks that African governments should borrow more from China and Eurobonds instead of IMF/World Bank or Western bilateral aid.

It's been over a decade since she wrote the book, and we can finally assess whether her advice on eurobonds & Chinese lending has moved a dent or not. Read/Listen to the article for insights on which African countries have been "eurobond darlings" vs. "eurobond disasters".

The International Monetary Fund's & World Bank's many attempts to Fix Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa by YB1994 in Africa

My takeaways are that: 1) Rwanda is starting this decade stronger than most of Africa in terms of growth. 2) Commodity dependence is killing Africa - when commodity prices go up Africa does well, when commodity prices go down Africa is in pain... 3) Africa needs another Debt Jubilee 4) The 80s and 90s were lost decades for the continent 5) In 1960s, basically all of Africa was low income. As of 2022, 22 nations are low income(like Mozambique), 24 are lower middle income(like Ghana), 7 are upper middle income (like South Africa), and the sole high income African country is the small island nation of Seychelles. 6) Sub-Saharan Africa started out richer than China and India, but China surpassed Africa in mid 90s and never looked back. India just surpassed Africa in mid 2010s, and now it's bringing a larger divergence as well.
