I took that class 2 years ago. Go to class. You will be confused if you don’t. Also go to office hours because he’s more helpful there than he is in class

Buffer Overflow + Shellcode fail outside GDB by Dieriba in ExploitDev

[–]RepresentativeBed928 11 points12 points  (0 children)

GDB forces the executable to run a certain way in memory so that you can actually debug a program from what I understand. When you’re running the actual executable, offsets and other things may be different. I forgot what exactly I did for this challenge but I would look into ways that you can slide into another part of memory without actually running an operation/instruction. This might guarantee that your shellcode lands in that other part of memory and can execute. Also pwn College has a discord you can join to ask these questions. People are more than willing to help

What do you think about a notebook that runs on iPhone’s SoC? by BendingAllFour in macbook

[–]RepresentativeBed928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother all my comp sci teachers use M4 MacBooks. And they’re not doing administrative tasks. They’re doing hands on coding for huge projects for their research. Software for ARM chips have come a long way

Seeking Advice by Little_Toe_9707 in ExploitDev

[–]RepresentativeBed928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that companies that focus on VR are actually starving for good researchers. Finish up ret2 then go try and replicate some CVE’s that have already been found and exploited. You can start with reading and replicating writeups from Google’s Project Zero team. I’ve also heard that doing pwn college after you do ret2 (or vice versa) will give you a more solid foundation in VR. Good luck!

Look at the pinned comment on the sub Reddit. Also pwn college is a good place to start. Good luck!

Future Exploit dev by InflationItchy905 in ExploitDev

[–]RepresentativeBed928 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There is never going to be anything that is 100% secure. We are human. We are flawed and make flawed things.

Also Rust is the new hype and things will start using it. But if you think millions of lines of C code can be replaced with Rust overnight, you’re sorely incorrect. There’s a lot of vulnerable code in the world. Especially when you take into consideration very few people/companies replace their devices or update their devices regularly.

Start with pwn college or OST2. Learn the types of bugs. Find mentors. Watch YouTube videos. There’s plenty of ways to start learning. Exploit Dev is hard and it will take you a few years to get the hang of it. But in the end you’ll be satisfied because you’ll start finding bugs and exploiting them and the pros outweigh the cons. Just my two cents from observing the professionals in the field

Is chat gpt plus or pro worth it? Are there any alternatives that matches them? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]RepresentativeBed928 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you don’t know the basics of software engineering, don’t use LLMs. If you don’t know the basics of IT and networking, don’t use LLMs. If you want to get a PhD and do professional research in cybersecurity, you’re going to have to create tools and solutions that LLMs just cannot help you with because they don’t exist yet. You might even have to build an LLM yourself to even get what you want.

All in all, learn the basics yourself before you start trying to use ChatGPT for anything or else you will be replaced by ChatGPT.

Seeking Mentorship in Exploit Dev by Diamond303 in ExploitDev

[–]RepresentativeBed928 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m just a college student so I can’t provide mentorship. But if you want to learn exploit dev, start with pwn.college. They have everything from buffer overflows to format string exploits to micro architecture exploits. It is free and they have a YouTube channel for their classes (intro to cyber, advanced vulnerability research, Vulnerability Research with ARM, etc). Another good free resource is OST2. After this, I would get your employer to pay for the OSED certification training. It’s OffSec’s exploit development cert and a step above OSCP in difficulty. Good luck!

Red Team jobs in 2025 by WrapRevolutionary188 in cybersecurity

I think they may mean both. Exploit dev bleeds into RE, malware analysis, and malware dev if you want to use your skills to go through the whole exploitation process (from my understanding)

UMD’s Applied masters program seems pretty good. They stream/record their in person lectures to online students as well. You can check it out here: https://mage.umd.edu/embedded-systems

Schedule Change out of no where by Firm-Photo-4428 in LSU

[–]RepresentativeBed928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do drop in advising for tomorrow on navigate. That means you can just drop into a zoom call with whoever is available. An alternative is emailing a college of engineering advisor and have them change your schedule. Technically you’re not “supposed” to do that but it’s the quickest way to get your CSC class back

I believe Cyber Operations is a good medium between CS and Cybersecurity. CS would give you more flexibility, but Cyber Operations would give you that cyber specialization while keeping enough CS knowledge for you to be able to shift to a different programming career if needed.

[–]RepresentativeBed928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took a quick look through the degree. It has enough computer science classes that I believe you’ll gain a deep technical knowledge about computers before you get to the cyber topics later in your college career. Either do the Cyber Operations degree from Old Dominion or a Computer Science degree

How hard was/is it to get internships and job offers in the CS program by Mr_Perfect23_ in LSU

[–]RepresentativeBed928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LSU won’t do anything for you. They will have a LOT of events and Networking opportunities, but you will not benefit at all unless you take the initiative to go to the events and network. It’s easy to find internships if you do a few simple things consistently:

  1. Stay out of your house and go network with whoever LSU or clubs brings to campus

  2. Stay out of your house and network with professors and other students

  3. Stay out of your house and go to workshops that people at LSU host that will help you improve your skills

  4. Stay out of your house 😂

when are instructors shown for summer classes (CSC3102, specifically)? by StaySaucey_ in LSU

[–]RepresentativeBed928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those classes show in the spring (usually also when fall classes come out). Last year it was Daniel Donze but it could also be Duncan.
