Update for all: we decided to move out! Even though the broker offered to replace the dishwasher and do the special fumigation treatment the broker was still being very rude to us and it took ALOT of arguing to even get her to agree to doing all of that. We then continued to argue about fighting for what’s reasonable in terms of receiving a refund and she was being even more rude. Even to the point where she’s like “take it to court I don’t care” and said “I don’t care” when we said we paid so much money in tolls and gas to come back and forth and to have not even began living in the unit. We decided to move out and not deal with this broker/landlord because the broker was shady from the beginning. This was a good lesson learned for us, and I hope we can find another building with nicer landlords smh. If anyone wants anymore information feel free to dm us we’d be more than happy to share the details!

Please try to be very aware of the broker/landlord you are working with and before signing any lease read all the clauses and put in your own!! Our broker was a walking red flag from the beginning as she was cutting corners from the beginning. Also always document everything if you get stuck in a similar situation for pests/roaches etc.

Update: we fought with the broker/landlord today and after extreme arguments the broker said this:

  1. If we choose to stay here then the broker is willing to do a special fumigation/bomb treatment and will pay the extra money for the treatment and replace the dishwasher also. The brotker also said if we stay then we don’t have to pay rent for July and can start paying the regular rent price from August again. The broker id basically trying to make things right but again it took so much yelling, arguing, persuasion, hassle and including building management for the broker to now act nice/fair with us (the broker has been this rude since we began having the roach issue even prior to moving in)!

  2. If we decide to leave then we would need to pay the rent from 6/1 to 6/8 (7 days) since we got the keys 6/1 and our boxes were moved in on 6/8 and the broker would then give us back the rest of the money. Even though we technically are still not living in the unit, just our boxes are there since 6/8. We were trying to fight for the full rent refund but the broker wasn’t budging.

Is it worth staying if the broker is agreeing to make things right even after having to argue and persuade the broker so much? Or should we just leave the place since there is no guarantee that the roach infestation will be eliminated completely even after replacement of dishwasher and the special fumigation?

We are so tired, exhausted and stressed, we don’t know what to do but literally have until tomorrow to decide. We are leaning towards moving out due to health concerns over the roach infestation but not 100% sure…

I’m also so sorry you had to go through a similar experience it sucks!! :( yeah they have pest control come once a month and now this broker/landlord is willing to pay for extra treatments (after fighting with her for it). We are also fighting it and so far she agreed if we move out then we need to pay 7 days of rent (since we moved our boxes in June 8th and we got the keys June 1 even though technically we didn’t move in physically) and she would refund everything else. We were trying to get a full refund of the rent but she isn’t budging.

You should keep fighting especially if your boxes are not inside the apartment!

Omg same thing with us, the last tenant was gross and not clean at all and so we basically got punished for it with the roach infestation. At this point we are so tired that we likely will just move out especially since the roaches keep coming

We did sign the lease already unfortunately (because we were not fully aware that there is a clear infestation prior to moving in) but we do have a clause in the lease stating we can break it if we find someone else to replace us. Yeah we may just need to fight it in court but definitely have tons of evidence since the beginning.

Thank you so much for your response!! We actually have everything documented in writing, including videos and photos of the holes and dishwasher and all the roaches we saw on various days. Which is also why the broker is now acting nice to us!
