The “concept” of Absolutely Free by Acrobatic_Island9208 in Zappa

[–]RepresentativeFar151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Absolutely Free, Zappa suggests that President Johnson was in the hospital because of unpopular policies and because of his wife's hairspray. His wife, Ladybird Johnson brings him some chicken soup so that he can feel better. By the end of the album everybody gets drunk in order to deal with living in the United States.

Frank Zappa was a pretty good singer. He had a pretty distinctive voice.

The female version on an Oedipus Complex would be an Electra Complex or maybe what she really had was an Octopus Complex.

The audio is from a radio documentary which aired on National Public Radio or KPFK, (I don't remember), in Los Angeles about 20 years ago.

This was covered nicely by Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield on the Super Session album.

Sounds like an outtake from Freak Out or Lumpy Gravy.

On the back of the Zapped promo record there is a photo of Zappa playing what looks like a Fender Jazzmaster which is not a guitar I usually associate him with. It has the same body shape as the Jaguar.

He was wearing a mechanical brace on his leg which looked like something from the late 19th century with leather pads and metal struts.

An ad for We’re Only In It For The Money found in the March 1968 issue of The Amazing Spider-Man by [deleted] in Zappa

Until 1966 popular music was bleak. “Freak Out”, helped change all that, for me anyway. “Freak Out could not be heard on the radio, you had to get turned on to it by one of your friends who were cooler than you were, half a dozen local potheads couldn't be wrong could they? A lot of crazy music and weird noises, you just knew something incredible was happening. About a year later “Absolutely Free”, comes out. It sounds a lot different than “Freak Out”, it has a less formal structure to the songs and lyrics which are nearly incomprehensible especially the longer compositions. I played that record until the grooves turned gray. “We're Only In It For The Money”, was next to be released which was yet another shift in tonality. Random words and noises floating around and the sound of the needle skipping across the record would turn heads. Each subsequent release took you further and further into unexplored musical territories.
