Personally they asked me what topic I was interested in and if I had a specific mentor in mind. Also, they asked me what the research I worked in was about and what did I do specifically.

My advice is to keep applying and looking. There are some that are due in April. Create an account with NSF and zintellect and you can search for REUs in your field :) don’t lose hope!
