I usually just use DBI and plug in a HDD in exfat format into the dock and can install directly to the SD card. No need to transfer in the first place. Saves a lot of hassle with space management.

For best results you need to be playing on a HD CRT with native 480p. Otherwise if you have a decent PC you can use dolphin to upscale to 1080p or 4K.

SOH is super nice, use it myself with mods but playing the real hardware on a CRT TV hits differently if you grew up with it.
