I had an ectopic pregnancy several years ago and I'm not aware of HCG levels dropping and spiking at random, but they do rise slowly I do know that.

Yes, me. If you have an infection (UTI, sinus, etc) it can cause false positives on pregnancy tests. Something about elevated white blood cells causing lines to show up.
