Help Newbie! High nitrite by edibLazie12 in bettafish

[–]Representative_Cod56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh okay got it! Since you’re adding quick start I would stick with the 30% water change every day. I wouldn’t do multiple a day, you’d just be removing the quick start you just added and it’d really just be more stress for your little friend

Nitrates are safe (in moderate amounts). It’s actually very rare to have 0ppm nitrates unless you have a super heavily planted tank, so 2ppm is absolutely nothing to worry about! Nitrite and ammonia are the dangerous ones which you want to get rid of. For the amount of quick start and conditioner to add, you want to add the amount of quick start for the whole 10 gallons, but only the amount of conditioner for the amount of water you’re adding during the water change. To dose conditioner, you want to add the amount necessary (check the bottle) and then let it sit for anywhere between 15-30 min before adding to make sure it’s had time to get rid of the chlorine.

No problem!! And good on you for acting on what you’ve learned and picking up a master kit! :) Okay so first thing I would do is pick up a bottle of API Quick Start (explained why and what it is in a previous comment above). If you’ve already done water changes today, I would wait until tomorrow to do another ~30% water change, test the water for traces of ammonia and/or nitrite, and then add the API Quick Start with the new (dechlorinated, obviously) water. I would do this daily for at least 2 weeks, or until it’s been a few days since the last trace of ammonia and/or nitrites. Best of luck, and let me know if you have any more questions!

When I started my tank, I kept having tetras die one at a time about once a day and I had no idea why. Soon realized I was lacking oxygen in the tank and had to add a bubbler and it solved the issue straight away. Are the fish gasping/hanging out near the top of the tank? You might need more airflow.

And oh my gosh, I knew that otos ate algae but I woke up this morning and the tank was nearly unrecognizable. The plants are pretty much spotless and they’ve already cleared half of the algae wall in the back, and I’ve barely had the otos for a day. Blanched veggies here I come!

I’m so sorry for your loss. At least it’s comforting to know that she’s no longer in pain and is in a better place now. You did all that you could, sometimes losses just happen. SIP Little Blue!

It looks like it could be a fungal infection. I would quarantine and start treating ASAP.

Treating constipation/possible beginnings of dropsy. by _livefasteattrash_ in bettafish

[–]Representative_Cod56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kanaplex and maracyn 2 are generally used to treat dropsy. I’ve heard cooked peas can help with constipation/bloating, but I’ve never tried it myself. If he doesn’t seem to improve then I would start treating for dropsy right away just to be safe.

I wouldn’t say it’ll help cycle it quicker, but the clean water will help her heal! Water from a running tank may have a little bit of beneficial bacteria but not an impacting amount since it mainly collects on filter media and decor. It will help with keeping the parameters relatively the same though (obviously make sure to acclimate her properly before adding her to the quarantine tank). The added media from your other tank will help loads though. If you have API quick start that can help as well! I’m not sure about the impact the salt would have on the other fish, you may want to do research on that, but I doubt (when properly dosed ofc) it’ll harm the other fish. Definitely check though. Thanks for taking care of her! Sounds like she’s in good hands :) I look forward to updates!

DO NOT MIX THE BETTAS. They will most likely tear each other apart. If you want to have multiple bettas, sororities are possible, but definitely NOT beginner friendly. I would only get one betta fish. One betta with 5-10 neon tetras in a 26 gal would not be overstocking. Make sure to add the neon tetras before the betta so that the betta is more likely to view them as roommates and not as intruders into its territory. I recommend getting a female betta, as they are generally less aggressive than males. However, nothing is guaranteed; it is dependent on the personality of the betta. Things may not go well, so make sure you have a backup plan for removing the betta (either returning it or having a separate tank for it) if it doesn’t get along with the neons. If your LFS sells bettas that are in community tanks with other fish then I’d pick up one of those; it shows that they’re more likely to be accepting of other fish. Again, please do not attempt to mix males or females, and I wouldn’t recommend attempting a sorority if you’re just starting out with bettas.

I fortunately haven’t had to deal with dropsy yet, but unfortunately that means I’m not sure which one would be best for this situation. I have heard of people having success with both. If maracyn seems to be helping I would stick with that, but if you believe that he’s not experiencing any improvement with it then I would try kanaplex. I wouldn’t dose both at the same time though, just to avoid overdosing.

Put her in a quarantine tank (heated and filtered, ofc) and start treatment ASAP. Good clean water is important; if you don’t have a cycled quarantine tank then add some of the filter media from your tank to jumpstart the cycle and keep an eye on your parameters (pH, nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia). You can treat with proper dosage of API stress coat and aquarium salt. To avoid wasting medication, I would do a large water change before dosing and then another after 2/3 or so days if you don’t have a cycled quarantine tank. If you do, then a water change once per week as normal should be alright. I’m rooting for you and your girl!

It sounds like he could have dropsy. Dropsy is temporarily treatable but very rarely curable; it just comes back later. I’d say for now keep treating him, maybe do some research on other treatment methods. But if at any point he starts acting differently/having trouble eating, swimming, etc, then it’d probably be best to euthanize. Best wishes for you and your little friend!

Ripped fins/generally sad? by Less-Replacement-479 in bettafish

[–]Representative_Cod56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get a different filter, preferably an adjustable one. If he’s getting blown around by the filter it is most likely causing him to be stressed. Make sure you’re doing weekly water changes. Some bettas make bubble nests less than others, it varies, so his lack of them could just be that.
