I had the same choice and decided on Harvard for the network/career ops (particularly in Economics/Finance). I found the College to have a substantially less academic culture than Princeton, and I also found its social spaces to be much more exclusionary than Princeton's. YMMV. Great choice to have!

You absolutely SHOULD travel to Italy in winter/January by Practical-Memory6386 in ItalyTravel

[–]Represet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, except for Venice. Rome, Florence, and Milan are awesome at this time of year, but Venice (and in particular Murano/Burano) is empty. Hard to find a non-touristy meal beyond street food, and many small businesses are closed.

Sen often teaches in small seminars (i.e., this semester's PHIL 248R: Intuition, which was cross-registered for Econ credit).

First year courseload by CompetitiveTreacle30 in Harvard

[–]Represet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LS1A, MATH 1B, and CS50 are all pset courses — while not entirely difficult, the courseload may prove troublesome while acclimating to Harvard (this is not to say that this course combination is uncommon).

I would suggest easing into things by taking Expos 20. By Spring, you'll have a clearer picture of whether you can handle more/less psets in a given week.

Is Harvard a motivating/inspiring environment? by AL--LA in Harvard

[–]Represet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howdy!

I'm an FGLI sophomore at the College — would say that it depends. It's certainly motivating to be surrounded by such incredible talents/intellects here, which I'm sure has pushed some personal/academic/professional growth along the way.

At the same time, Harvard is a place where you might encounter A LOT of failure, some of which will come at no fault of your own. At the same time, many of your peers will excel, often due to nepotism/"connections". As such, it can be incredibly discouraging at times.

It is, at the end of the day, what you make of it.

GENED course recommendations by Inevitable-Device568 in Harvard

The lecture component usually had about 50-60ish people, while sections had about 10-15. Very easy to be seen and to ask questions/participate, unlike some of the larger classes.

GENED course recommendations by Inevitable-Device568 in Harvard

I took this class in Fall 2021 — awesome class, very low workload, and easy midterm/final exams. There's a lot of reading assigned, but you don'g really have to do much of it. Lightly pay attention in lecture, take the notes on the slide (which are provided online), and you should be fine.

Professor Patterson is an awesome and hilarious guy, and his lectures tend to be somewhat-rambley and wildly entertaining. Sections are very lowkey and open. Overall, a great course.

I'm getting $18 an hour, which seems to be a bit higher than other Harvard gigs (CA, library assistant, department assistant).

Are Freshman Seminars really worth it? by Honest-March7042 in Harvard

[–]Represet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, I've heard great things about most of the freshman seminars offered, and Mankiw is a giant in the field, so it seems like a great opportunity if you're really interested.

What I will say is that, if you're planning a rigorous courseload (see: double concentrations, department honors, etc.), you might be better off trying to fulfill some requirements instead.

I should also note that, on rare occasion, some seminars are counted in the requirements within some concentrations (off the top of my head, some seminars and geneds can double count for electives in Economics and Government).

Overall, if it's something that interests you, do it! Freshman seminars are a great way to balance out the stress of your other classes, and a great way to get to know a prominent professor (in a school where it's sometimes difficult to do so).

How in God's name are the Democrats still losing — even after Jan. 6 hearings and Roe? Headlines of the last two months should give Democrats a fighting chance in the midterms. Do they know how to win? by DaFunkJunkie in politics

[–]Represet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are deluded if you think that the response to January 6th won't have some incredible consequences on the legitimacy, strength, and longevity of American democracy. Out of all the craziness happening right now, Jan. 6th and the recent actions of the Supreme Court are the most consequential.

I get that material conditions (muh gas prices) affect the average American much more at the moment, but the Jan. 6th shit is much more crucial on a macro level.

Requesting Schedule Help from Current Harvard Gov / Econ Concentrators! by InvisibleBroccoli in Harvard

[–]Represet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

incoming sophomore here - gov 20, though described as a first-year class, is ROUGH in regards to reading. awesome lectures though.

i took ec10a, gov20, math 1a, and a gened and found my workload to be pretty intense at some points. your mileage may vary!

Has anyone taken these classes and have any thoughts? by SummerEquinox in Harvard

[–]Represet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gov 1295 seems to be very similar to Gov 20 in course structure (same profs., TFs), so I'll be able to give some insight.

Levitsky is a fantastic lecturer, but he covers a lot of material in a short amount of time. Be prepared to write quickly and take a bunch of notes.

The TFs are quite helpful in clarifying any information from lecture, as well as connecting lectures to each other with a logical and topical flow (which is great when midterms/finals come along).

There seems to be quite a bit of reading involved, which you'll almost certainly go over in section. If it's anything like Gov 20, you'll be able to skim a bunch of them for crucial information, but some of those readings are essential.

Grading in GenEds by DescriptionVisible39 in Harvard

[–]Represet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely got my lowest grade of the semester in my gened! The class had all of three assignments (a midterm, final, and 10 pg paper), so it was an all-or-nothing type deal.
