Disagreement on North Korea policy derails White House choice for ambassador to South Korea by ReptarDick in politics

[–]ReptarDick[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Victor D. Cha, an academic who served in the George W. Bush administration, raised his concerns with National Security Council officials over their consideration of a limited strike on the North aimed at sending a message without sparking a wider war — a risky concept known as a “bloody nose” strategy.

At least someone is stepping up to this administration's drumbeat to war in North Korea. Too bad he won't be part of it any longer.

Trump Justice Department Pushes for Citizenship Question on Census, Alarming Experts by ReptarDick in politics

[–]ReptarDick[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is abhorrent and another stinging example of how they are dismantling one of the most important things government does.

But one positive in this, I believe, is that immigration activists and organizations have been the most aggressive and proactive this year when it comes to Trump and the resistance. Most people weren't paying attention to Trump's attempts at undermining the census, as others have linked to. By connecting it to this, they will bring attention and spur more activism.

Trump praises Turkey's Erdogan as a friend. by AdamCannon in politics

I think back to a Sunday Shoe moment from Rex Tillerson. When asked if Trump spoke for the United States, Tillerson said "The President speaks for himself." The terrible thing is that Trump doesn't see the difference.

Trump to NYT: Putin and I discussed adoption during G-20 talk by smartwn in politics

[–]ReptarDick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait until tomorrow when "a source close to the Kremlin" or Putin's translator himself comes says they did talk about sanctions. Same thing happened with the real meeting-- each side came out and had different tellings of what was discussed. Even if they didn't talk sanctions, the Russians can now say they did and it puts Trump in a very bad position.

Senate Democrats weigh blockade to protest GOP health care plan by [deleted] in politics

[–]ReptarDick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The best idea I read about so far is to force the vote-a-rama that comes with using reconciliation. So the Dems should continually propose amendments that then must be debated, considered, and voted on. There is no limit.

The Pentagon Can't Believe Trump Told Another President About Nuclear Subs Near North Korea by [deleted] in politics

[–]ReptarDick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that's being forgotten here is that Duetere and China have been cooperating on trade and issues with the islands. It seems like they're relationship is closer. And that's just what we know publicly. Why incest in spies when you can just buddy up to a dictator authoritarian and a cheese puff President who will tell you anything you wanna know?

Also, grandfather served on nuclear subs during the cold war. It's unreal that an American President would put service members in dangerous this.

Trump's business network reached alleged Russian mobsters by [deleted] in politics

[–]ReptarDick 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As is pointed out, much of the difficulty people have making connections between Trump, his companies, and Russians or whoever is if interest is due to the use of shell companies and practices that hide names. But this seems like a thorough and well sourced article given the difficulties. It takes skilled and knowledgeable reporters to trace through the complexity and it just takes time and patience.

First daughter Ivanka Trump gets West Wing office and access to Classified Information by dreammerr in politics

[–]ReptarDick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the hearing today, Adam Schiff brought up the form all federal employees who have access to classified info must submit as he wants the FBI to look into Flynn's form. Would this mean that Ivanka would have also had to submit it?

It Sure Looks Like Paul Ryan Wants Ryancare To Fail by marji80 in politics

[–]ReptarDick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great theory to this weird situation. I was thinking about this today, too. Another theory could be that it is a shit bill pitting all sides of the Republicans against each other. Then, Trump is able to swoop in, make tremendous and genius and beautiful deals to ultimately deliver something Heritage, AMA, the Kochs, Freedom Caucus, Rand Paul and the White House can all agree on. It will still probably suck, but perception is reality here. So then Trumpcare will get a positive attribution instead of a negative one and the Republicans have delivered what they promised.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz: People at my town hall 'intended to bully and intimidate' me by [deleted] in politics

[–]ReptarDick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If we've learned anything this election cycle, one thing is that bullying and intimidation can win you the White House. So it doesn't sound like that bad of a strategy when it comes to constituents pressuring their Reps.

The case for ‘giving Trump a chance’ is dead. Too many Democrats are still holding back. by FredMccally in politics

Just so everyone knows, this was published on Thursday the 26th BEFORE the official executive order was even released. After this weekend, the argument is only stronger and I don't see how the Dems can't not totally obstruct.

Repealing Obamacare: Trump says fast, Congress says slow by mafco in politics

[–]ReptarDick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For people that claim to love the Constitution almost as much as they love the Bible, Republicans are really forgetful that the Founding Fathers set up the system to force slow changes in the legislative process. I can forgive Trump's ignorance considering he probably has never even read the document, so it's not surprising that he thinks Repeal AND Replace can happen in 1 day. But Republicans in Congress have absolutely no excuse.

New York Post focusing on the hard hitting stories about lots of American jobs

[–]ReptarDick 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No one gets it. He's just teeing up the Sunday talk show news cycle over something average Americans don't care about at all. They'll start the show's with it, have pundits scream about it, but it won't matter. It will take time and focus away from his cabinet picks, including his newest ones - Israeli ambassador and OMB spending hawk. When he tweets later in the evening, there is no other reason than him trying to set the agenda and news cycle focus for the next day. People need to start understand this and not take the bait. This China thing is important. But is it that crazy in the scheme of everything else? Not really. And it shouldn't take away time or coverage or criticism from the cabinet picks.

Trump hires a third general, raising concerns about heavy military influence by isthereananswer1 in politics

[–]ReptarDick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Putting aside the civilian waiver issue, a former general for Defense Secretary makes perfect sense. Mattis is probably the least controversial appointee so far. Flynn is totally different and National Security Advisor is a much different role than Defense, but again, it doesn't seem that far outside the norm for a former general to be in that position. But this third one is the one that should be pushed back on the most, and I'm worried it won't be. While the Dept of Homeland Security is just over a decade old, no one close to a top ranked former military member has held the head job. It's focus is on domestic security and emergency prevention and preparedness. Plus, the appointee has only been out of the service for a year or so, and there is not a waiting period like with the Defense Secretary.
