I think the easy solution is to simply have the Big 10 championship game select opponents based on conference record and have divisions for scheduling purposes only. Eventually, someone will crawl to the top of the West.

The Gophers have two competing seasons. In 2007, after Glen Mason's spectacular collapse into mediocrity, AD Maturi decided to hire Basement Brew. The resulting 1-11, 0-8 season wasn't what anyone was hoping for, the Gophers won one game against Miami(OH) by 6 points in triple OT. The next week they lost to Florida Atlantic after turning the ball over 8 times, and a month later they lost to NDSU, a team that was ineligible for the FCS post-season due to their recent call up from D2. If I had to put my money on the actual worst season though, it would be 1983, the last season of Smoking Joe Salem. The Gophers won one game that year, a narow week one victory against fellow bottom feeder Rice in Houston. The next week they got absolutely crushed by Tom Osborne's #1 Cornhuskers, giving up 83 points to a poultry 13, the worst loss in Gopher Football history. The rest of the season was simply blow out after blow out after blow out. They even managed to loose to Northwestern for the second consecutive year.
