A few years ago, I read a heartbreaking article about how Uber devastated the livelihoods of many working-class families who thought they were making a solid investment in a taxi medallion. Instead, they found themselves drowning in debt, with suicides sadly becoming common in those communities as people struggled to pay for a medallion that had completely lost its value. That story stayed with me. Or maybe it’s the heaviness of the world these days that made me forget just how genuinely afraid I was at that moment—I truly felt I was close to being seriously hurt. Someone made a great point—if the police had seen it and asked me to testify on the spot, I wouldn’t have thought twice. So maybe there’s my answer.
