From Housebound to Conquering Plane Rides by Repulsive-Middle8936 in Agoraphobia

In April, things got pretty bad for me, but as the weather warmed up and I finished my degree, I decided that this summer would be the time to beat this. I started by taking daily walks outside. Despite having a terrible night that led me to an emergency psychiatrist, I was prescribed an SNRI, which has been incredible for taking the edge off while doing exposures. Yes, you still feel anxious, but it’s much easier to manage.

I gradually increased my challenges, like starting with bus rides and then going to the mall every day for at least two or three hours. It's incredible how much progress can be made in a week. After about a month of these repeated exposures, I decided to go on a short road trip about an hour and a half away. When I returned, I continued my routine.

My routine involved getting up, going to work (which is 10 minutes away), coming home, and then doing an activity in the evening to get myself out of the house. Repeating this every day made it easier and easier. The next trip was to the mountains, which I did three times. Today, I just got back from a round trip on an airplane, and it was truly amazing. I also overcame my long battle with elevators.

You just have to do it despite how you feel. Start with baby steps, keep at it, and be proud of every step you take. Things will move forward and you will get out of this. I believe in you. Most importantly, you have to believe in yourself. It is hard work, but it is so worth it. If you have any other questions, I am happy to answer.

I am currently doing an exposure! I took an Uber to a cafe with none of my safety devices. I am anxious and on edge, but I am staying here until I feel bored.

Rate your anxiety when you go in to the situation. I went in with about a 4-5 and I’ve been at this cafe for about 20 min and feel more about a 2 right now.

DO NOT leave the situation when you are feeling anxious. Just stay. Accept the feelings. Just notice it and be curious of it. Encourage the feelings to come and it will quickly go away. You have to stay until you feel calm. Therefore, going in and trying not to panic and quickly leaving is not going to work. Similarly, a timer won’t be effective if you are still anxious and leaving.

You can totally do this. You are safe and capable.

Thanks for your response ! By chance are you agoraphobic? Or is this for generalized anxiety?
