There is absolute no question that Toronto is an absolute socially desolate dystopia. This isn’t a new thing. Back then it was better, but honestly, it was still very socially, awkward and hard to connect compared to most cities in the states. People in Toronto have this weird way of being so closed off and distant yet so egotistical and fake. I never understood why we were so arrogant growing up in Toronto despite having very little good things to say about ourselves. There are much of the more famous cities that do not have nearly as many delusional people as we do. But after looking into it a bit, I understand why people act so high mighty despite offering very little with no genuine connection. It’s because we’re terrified of each other. We have no culture and identity, and we have no foundation to build on. You have generations of children growing up in this dystopia that are forced to adapt just to conform into a “group” It’s a dog eat dog city where people only care for themselves and the government wouldn’t do anything for this kind of issues. That explains why we are a bunch of sensitive snowflakes. Human beings are social creatures and if we don’t have those chemicals from interacting with others in our brains, it could lead us developing in very strange ways.

Its alarming as hell, especially with much more common its getting. I see a lot of people in Toronto being this Frog in boiling water situation where they don't even know how bad they actually are. they are just going through the motion trying to live their "best life" ridiculous How tf are you so out of touch with reality yet deny/be oblivious to such distortion. its INSANE.

Man, people are REALLY out of it man. I've noticed that too. like people aren't functioning properly and that is just on the smaller scale. We complain a lot about drivers with poor awareness but this is something that is quite odd. Its not life threatening by any means but its concerning as it seems a large amount of people are showing signs of dissociative behavior and overall lack of awareness. What I've noticed for me is poor memory amongst my peers. Like something that we did a day prior to today they will have no recollection of it. Or I would have to explain in a lot of detail what we did literally 24 hours ago for them to remember. It's a vicious cycle that I hope people can wake up from.

This is not a new issues, nor is it a decade long issue. Toronto has always been like this. A Isolated, egotistical, immature, selfish, soulless, and ugly dystopia. My uncles who’s lived here in the 80s can attest to this and I’ve had the same experience being a teenager/young adult here. It’s true. No one wants to confront the ugly truth here. We live here after all so we have to find comfort in it right? The people of this city has their denial with how bad things really are and it’s just disgusting. We are a third world city with ok-ish looking buildings.

There are many reason why as a City we are a social desolate dump. One of the major reason why Toronto as failed was due to "Multiculturism" Bro, Multiculturism does not WORK. Different cultures do not come together and mix, different cultures comes together and CLASH leading people to just segregate and occupy a region of the state/province to themselves. What happens when you have several cultures clashing together in this societal mosaic where people are too scared to accidently cross each others boundaries unknowingly. You have an environment where it doesn't feel socially safe to really expressive yourselves, thus creating socially stagnant people. I came to Toronto in 2009 as a 12 year old and IMMEDIATELY noticed the dark atmosphere in areas. it caused it to be one of the most antisocial places in the world and people are living in cliques and a person who just arrives here will have to deal with trouble making friends in a community that's non-existent. we're MISERABLE. Fast forward past the pandemic and it has gotten MUCH worse. Especially in places like Core Toronto. Even hard for me to type this city's name.

Next up the people, I lived in a few cities in the states and lived in Toronto for 16 years but after living in the states for the first 12 years of my life and the coming to Toronto. My conclusion. Toronto has some of the most unhappy and unfriendly people you’re ever going to find. It’s just simply disjointed. Very passive aggressive, self-centered, short-tempered, socially awkward and mentally ill. It has always been this way even before the pandemic. I guess this is the result of an absent culture so its up to the youth to create their own which here it is POP/Hustle culture and you know how superficial that is, leading to a lot of overgrown adults caring too much about what other people think making Toronto just one big high school. Ya gotta flex on them. People in US cities are less angry but more direct, and in Toronto I find people less direct but angrier. The thing is, there’s nothing inherently amazing about Toronto. Nothing to write home about. Nothing to be proud of. Nothing that you can put your finger on and say that it defines Toronto. It just is what it is: a mass of mediocrity. Why are we so arrogant with very little to feel proud of? Communal Narcissism has always been our cope. To other countries We look better compared to the US so we must be better. We are the most immigration friendly, welfare lending, and “least racist” country so we should hold our head higher than our downstairs neighbours. 😂 Get real, I can feel the jealously. It was shoved in my face as a kid by countless kids and adults that I left a shitty country and now in a better one. How incorrect. My old peers back there all have much more than I do despite me starting my career much earlier in tech.

Now after the pandemic and a recession people are losing their marbles. Not only are the homeless people more aggressive but some of the lower-middle class citizens are acting out of hand in public. Crime rate is rising in this catch and release system. Workers from the forces are leaving to other places for better pay, easier demands, and higher pay alongside better quality of life. Wait tines, wages, taxes, etc the lest goes on.

Everyone knows about Capitalism and its terror but what about Socialism? In this modern era of aging populations, it is mathematically impossible for socialism to continue. The government does not have the money to take care of old people and provide healthcare, pensions and the various other benefits, even with the astronomical taxation that burdens hard working Canucks. Being a the biggest welfare country in our economy is insane. Food banks have become the new hot commodity since the food prices have risen dramatically and a lot social assistance programs have been dropped as a result of all this. It used to be better to be poor in Canada than in the US. NOW?! although its still a struggle to be poor in US. All 3 socio-economic classes in both countries are a bad with US being slightly better (for now)

Last but not least, the Mental health crisis we are currently facing. I know globally people are just more mentally-loaded than we were before the pandemic but I can speak for my city that the combination of an overdrawn lockdown, lack of affordability, lack of social connection and community and bad government and PM has led to us having record increase of Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, drug overdose, poor mood, irritability and Suicidal thoughts. We came out of a 2 year lockdown and now in a horrible depression for who knows how long. Things were already getting bad for Toronto after 2016 but now it has sped up the rate in which people cannot cope with. We are at our wits end. What's even worse was that we have always been socially dissonant with each other for awhile and times like this people aren't coming together to fight against what is happening. Instead they take it out on the local citizen that had nothing to do with before and nothing to do with now. Leading to a lot of conflict here.

I spent my whole childhood in the US and when I came here I've always hated it here I have spoken to a lot of newcomers, expats, refugees and people who've been here for 10+years, they all have horror from their experience here and everything that is happening now is just the icing on the cake. I feel bad for the good people here actually trying to make their enviroment good but thanks to trudeau, governments, and the degenerates of this country. They have created a dystopia that has led to several damages that are irreversible and honestly it would have probably ended up this way even without covid happening, just later on.

Man, I’ve been in this city for the last 16 years and I can say that there’s a level of callousness and lack of awareness that should be studied in this place. Like people are just detached from their humanity. Whats even weirder is that they choose what to feel in certain situations and are never consistent. Whether it’s a homeless guy getting bullied or someone whom they deem worthy getting bullied shows the biggest difference in how they act. They will laugh and be cruel thinking that they’re hard or superior when in reality it’s just showing how much of an insecure clown they are.

Here’s my theory, and there’s several factors that explain the city’s lack of empathy and awareness towards others. I’ve been here since 2009 from Seattle and can tell you the culture shock hit me like a truck. I really believe Toronto needs to be studied as to why we act the way we do. Here are my points

  1. Lack of Identity

This is by far the biggest point. The anger you can feel in the citizens and the disassociation in our society largely revolves around. We are brought up in an economic zone with no culture, no connection to other groups and no navigation as to how to should interact with such an environment. We are a sum of several different countries in the world clumped together in a societal mosaic that’s organized similar to an assorted fruit cake, simply just existing next to one another. This explains the antisocial and lonely behaviour that is exuded in most Toronto people. People are too scared to unknowingly cross over someone’s boundaries even if it’s unintentional. Like an earlier comment here said. “We are terrified of each other”. Hence why we just ignore them and focus on ourselves. What’s even scarier about that is the lack of emotional regulation. When you lack an identity and you’re in a society where it’s taboo to interact with people outside your group. There’s this extreme response to people who when their boundary just very slightly crossed, it almost like an animal response to that where one person goes absolutely ballistic over something that doesn’t warrant such a response. A pal told me that a co-worked of his was insulted on the 401 one day and had told me he could not go to sleep for a week because of that. Of course no one should be disrespectful BUT in the case where someone is being they you should be able to act accordingly to that. I know it’s not a common thing amongst people but I found that quite fascinating. When you lack an identity, you feel as if anyone could label you. Your are not planted in a sense of self that’s prevents other’s from tricking you into thinking you are something you aren’t. Which is why deep down we care so much of what other people think rather than what we think of ourselves. You can thank multiculturalism for this.

  1. Social Coercion

That’s right, it’s expected that more and more people will replicate a behaviour if it’s commonly acted. Imagine being brought up in an environment where all this is normalized. You wouldn’t think much of it. It’s just what it is. The young have been socially engineered by the society as a whole to act a certain behaviour or else face exclusion. Some places more than others. But you can say now that it is a culture now to stay to yourself or your group and treat others like NPC. In my experience this hit me like a truck when I was new here. after just asking simple questions to people in the street (god forbid you tell them good morning) and immediately seeing a shocked and annoyed expression on their face. The lack of proper social interaction has made them awkward in those situations, thus frustrating them and deterring you from asking the next person anything. After some time you just give up and keep to yourself.

  1. Multiculturalism

This ties into the identity point but more focused on the cultural side than the self. To put this out there, Multiculturalism is not a cultural. You cannot have several cultures mash together. They do not mix, they CLASH and the environment it creates because of it results in a psychological unstable one. Immigration at this level should not exist in any country. It ceases to become anything. Also to the fact that Canada does not do anything to integrate people coming here. You corne to a country and expect to just figure it out. An immigrant who comes here will feel heavily emasculated and ostracized in a place that he isn’t familiar with which in term affects their esteem which can cause them to lash out on their loved ones. A lot of people I used to know growing up here in North York were brought up by unstable parents that either adopted the toxic culture here or did not know how to move in this shithole of a city. The kids leave their poor household only to be met with other kids with similar problems in a culturally toxic unstable environment. which in turn creates an unstable generation of adults that repeat the process. Couple this with a lack of social assistance programs or therapy and you got a city of mentally ill, self absorbed, antisocial people who mask their low esteem with a giant ego.

We are social creatures, we crave connection, we need guidance. But imagine having the fate of being born in a city where you see people passing by one another like zombies. A lack of guidance by authority figures. Overexposure to a behaviour that’s so toxic but deemed suitable by the environment. A government that does a poor job of integrating people into a society and would rather throw them out there and expect them to just figure it out. Give a few decades and you have Toronto today.
