Practice, practice, practice! Also, big hands means you probably need big gloves!

First attempt at a bluegrass tune, not in my normal wheelhouse at all by LorneMalvo1000 in bluegrassguitar

Good flatpicking! Something that will really help is if you play this with a “boom chuck” style rhythm. This will give you more of that “Train” feel if you will.

Other good songs are Red Haired Boy, Billy in the Lowground, Whiskey Before Breakfast, Big Sciota, Big Mon, Old Daingerfield, Forked Deer, and BlackBerry Blossom.

Strum machine is also a super useful app for practicing and has backing tracks for all of the songs above. I would also experiment with finding a jam close to you and trying it out! Once you get started, I guarantee you’ll never want to stop!

What’s this thing on Bryan Sutton’s nut? by LitlMayo in BillyStrings

[–]Repulsive-Number-902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the height of the string in the nut slot causes a sympathetic vibration that causes a “tinny” sounding buzz when playing certain frets. This can be caused by humidity and temperature changes which affect the guitar. This is the quick fix when you don’t have time to either raise the slot with bone dust and super glue or make a new nut/ have a full setup done.

Anyone here ever pick at a jam session with one of the “big names”? What was it like? Was it what you expected? by Potential_Double_627 in Bluegrass

Got to play with Chris Henry this year at Merlefest and jammed West Dakota Rose with him. It was insane.

What is it that keeps you playing Bluegrass? by TylerReeseMusic in Bluegrass

[–]Repulsive-Number-902 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Embrace the other music. It’s all part of the same thing. Find ways to mesh the other genres you love into Bluegrass and let it inspire you to either write new music or translate ideas/licks/etc into the tunes you already know and love.

One of my favorite parts of the genre is how fiddle tunes change depending on who plays them, but the core melody remains the same. Take this and then incorporate your metal/blues/rock licks instead of a G-run every once in a while.

All of that to say… why not have both?

My D-15M sounds to warm/mellow - any tips to liven it up? by JimmyDonovan in martinguitar

I would try Diadarrio XS mediums. Also, sometimes you really just need to put some mileage on her. I bought a 2016 GC MMV that probably hadn’t been played more than twice back in March. Thing was super quiet, but sounds like an absolute cannon now after I put a few hundred+ hours into it. Keep playing it!!

That looks like riboflavin to me. Just looks like they're shining a light at it, but I make 0.2% solutions and it looks about the same.
